Amidst a youth-oriented transition, the Yankees are glad to find themselves in a phase where even 22-year-old Anthony Volpe appears remarkably seasoned. This emerging shortstop’s recent performance has also contributed to the team’s momentum, as he extended his late-season resurgence during Thursday afternoon’s encounter. However, the elation from his most recent significant contribution was brief-lived and eventually undone by Gleyber Torres.

Anthony Volpe’s impactful performance took center stage in the ninth inning when he hammered a three-run homer to level the game’s score, solidifying his place in the 20/20 club. However, the Yankees’ fortunes took a turn as they eventually succumbed to a 4-3 defeat in 10 innings against the Tigers at Comerica Park.

Anthony Volpe’s Yankees record

In the ninth inning, Anthony Volpe etched his name in the franchise annals by becoming the first rookie to achieve a combination of at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a single season.

Faced with a 3-0 deficit, two outs, and base runners positioned on the corners, Anthony Volpe showcased his prowess by driving a 0-1 pitch to the opposite side of the field for a resounding three-run shot.

With 28 games still left in the season, Anthony Volpe’s tally stands at 20 home runs and 21 stolen bases.

Anthony Volpe expressed his astonishment, noting, “It’s quite unbelievable.” He mentioned that he hadn’t set specific numerical goals for the season but emphasized the significance of making a mark in Yankees history, describing it as an incredible and gratifying experience.

“I guess it’s pretty crazy,” Anthony Volpe said. “I never really had goals or anything like that going into the season, numbers-wise. But when you can put yourself in Yankees history, I mean, that’s pretty crazy. Pretty cool.”

"When you can kind of put yourself in Yankees history, I mean, that's pretty crazy."

Anthony Volpe’s rookie season hasn’t been without its challenges, and his progress has been marked by a learning curve. As of Thursday, his batting average stood at .219 with an OPS of .707, reflecting a mixture of struggles and achievements.

Nevertheless, Anthony Volpe’s performance at the plate has demonstrated greater stability in the latter half of the season. The Yankees have faith that enduring the highs and lows of his debut year will ultimately contribute to his growth in the long run.

According to Boone, Anthony Volpe’s performance on the field has been enjoyable. He highlighted the rookie’s ability to deliver crucial hits, including the one from today’s game. Additionally, he commended Anthony Volpe’s exceptional fielding contributions. Considering the attention and high expectations surrounding him, the Yankees manager noted his adeptness at handling various aspects of his role.

Torres wasted the record

However, the Yankees, holding a record of 65-69, found themselves on the wrong end of a walk-off fielder’s choice in the final moments. Gleyber Torres‘ errant throw to first base extinguished the possibility of a double play, which would have extended the game into the 11th inning.

In the pivotal sequence, reliever Jonathan Loaisiga adeptly handled the ground ball hit by Zack Short and initiated a throw to Torres for the initial out. Regrettably, Torres’ subsequent throwing mishap marred the play, affording the Tigers (60-74) an opportunity to avert the prospect of a four-game sweep.

Expressing his disappointment, manager Aaron Boone remarked that it was unfortunate the team couldn’t successfully complete the task. He also mentioned his unsuccessful attempt to challenge the play, raising the possibility that Torres’ throw might have been influenced by a takeout slide. Boone acknowledged that the throw from Loaisiga was slightly lower towards Torres’ thigh side, ultimately leading to an unsuccessful exchange and an inaccurate throw.

As Friday approaches, Anthony Volpe is poised to become the most seasoned rookie within a lineup that might feature other young talents such as 20-year-old Jasson Dominguez, 24-year-old Austin Wells, 23-year-old Oswald Peraza, and 22-year-old Everson Pereira.

Anthony Volpe acknowledged the peculiar sensation that arises when sharing his insights and aiding various individuals. He admitted, “It’s a bit unusual,” as he’s been consistently in that role throughout the entire year.
