Rookie Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe stood out as a bright spot by leading the Yankees put up a fight on Sunday that resulted in the tying the game on three separate occasions before narrowly losing 6-5. Among Anthony Volpe’s recent five home runs, four have played a role in either tying the game or putting the Yankees in the lead. With 17 homers, he holds the highest number for a Yankees shortstop since Gleyber Torres hit 38 in 2019, although Torres played both shortstop and second base that season.

The series displayed a clear disparity, with the Red Sox taking control in every aspect. However, in the final game on Sunday, the Yankees put up a fight, managing to tie the game on three separate occasions before eventually losing 6-5.

In the seventh inning, shortstop Anthony Volpe played a crucial role in the Yankees’ comeback by launching a three-run home run to right-center field.

Anthony Volpe acknowledged the team’s resilience, stating during YES Network’s postgame coverage that they demonstrated determination and managed to bounce back after being in tough situations. He highlighted the quality of their at-bats and emphasized that they played well throughout all 27 outs. Looking ahead, Anthony Volpe mentioned that they would carry this mindset into the upcoming series after the day off.

In the eighth inning, Anthony Volpe believed he could play the role of hero once again, adding to his four RBIs of the game. The young 22-year-old rookie hit a single to left field, resulting in Isiah Kiner-Falefa coming home from first base, while Rob Refsnyder rushed towards the ball. However, Refsnyder lost his balance on the grass and stumbled, leading to a throw to the cutoff man Trevor Story. Eventually, the ball reached catcher Connor Wong, who managed to tag Kiner-Falefa before he reached the plate. Initially, the run was awarded to New York, but the decision was overturned in favor of Boston upon further review.

Anthony Volpe acknowledged the difficulty of each defeat, emphasizing that they put up a fight and strove to improve their performance, aiming to take advantage of opportunities. He reiterated that every loss was challenging at this juncture.

The Yankees have suffered eight losses out of nine games against the Red Sox this season, leaving only a four-game series at Fenway Park in September. The Red Sox showcase significant talent, particularly as a strong team, according to Anthony Volpe. Their pitching strategy is assertive, and their lineup is packed with proficient hitters.

Expressing his perspective, Anthony Volpe remarked that the current series of losses and challenging moments had been disheartening. However, The Yankees’ rookie shortstop pointed out that this sentiment arises from the team’s awareness of their higher potential. He emphasized the collective belief that they possess the ability to overcome these difficulties, and he spoke of their determination to persevere and make a turnaround. Anthony Volpe conveyed a sense of unity within the team and a shared understanding of their current situation. Despite individual experiences, he noted that there’s a prevailing sense of frustration among all team members.

Clarke Schmidt put up a good start for the Yankees

Clarke Schmidt rebounded effectively from his poorest performance of the year and delivered a commendable 5 and 2/3 innings on the mound for the Yankees. He conceded two runs on four hits, one of which was a solo home run by Rafael Devers in the first inning.

Following his struggles against the Braves that led to his early exit from the game, Clarke Schmidt showcased a strong response at Yankee Stadium. He conceded a solo home run to the notorious Yankees nemesis Rafael Devers in the initial inning, and Devers managed to score again in the sixth due to an error in Anthony Volpe’s throw.

However, aside from these instances, Schmidt proved to be quite effective against the Boston lineup. In 15 out of his last 16 appearances, Schmidt has maintained the opposition to three earned runs or fewer, showcasing his consistent performance.

During Sunday’s game, he achieved a career-high by striking out eight batters. Schmidt’s performance included two walks and four hits surrendered, with two of those hits attributed to Devers.

Schmidt acknowledged that, except for a few batters, they were able to stick to their game plan and execute their pitches effectively. He credited Devers for his impressive performance and recognized his ability to see the ball well.

The Yankees starter also noted that aside from a few instances involving Devers, the team’s overall performance was strong during the game. Schmidt deviated from his usual pitch distribution by relying more heavily on the knuckle curve than he has done for the majority of the season. Usually, he employs the pitch around 18.4 percent of the time; however, during Sunday’s game, that number increased to 30 percent.

Throughout the game, the Yankees starter utilized the knuckle-curve 29 times against the Boston batters, managing to induce six swings and misses with it. Schmidt explained that the team’s strategy was to introduce some variation in his pitch usage and make his repertoire less predictable during the game.

Aaron Judge extended his on-base streak to 13 consecutive games. But the Yankees experienced their first home sweep since losing all four matches in a series against the Blue Jays from September 6-9, 2021. Sitting at a record of 60-64 for the season, the Yankees face the unsettling possibility of failing to achieve a winning record for the first time in three decades. Their ongoing losing streak of eight games marks the longest since 1995. Currently residing in the basement of the American League East, they trail by nine games in the race for a playoff berth, with a total of 38 games left in the season. Nevertheless, despite these challenges, the Yankees are not prepared to throw in the towel on their campaign.
