ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Yankees spent much of the summer trying to keep enough healthy starting pitchers on the mound. September has created a different problem.
New York now has more viable starters than obvious rotation turns, just as the postseason race demands shorter leashes, fresher arms and fewer wasted innings. The club carried that surplus onto the West Coast with six starters in play and several pitchers still working under workload considerations.
Tuesday’s 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels showed why that depth matters. Gerrit Cole worked 5 1/3 innings before Brent Headrick, Paul Blackburn and John Schreiber covered the final 3 2/3. The victory moved the Yankees to 79-60, 4.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East and four games ahead of Boston for the top American League wild-card spot.
The Padres series that begins Friday at Petco Park offers the Yankees their first real chance to turn that crowded rotation into something more deliberate. Max Fried is still building back after his second injured-list stint for a bone bruise in his left elbow. Will Warren is coming off one of his best starts of the season. Elmer Rodríguez remains on the roster despite an uneven first six major league starts.
That combination gives Aaron Boone choices that were not available earlier in the season. It also forces the Yankees to decide whether September should be used merely to line up five starters, or to begin testing a flexible pitching structure that could matter in October.
There is another reason the timing matters. The Yankees are off Thursday and again Monday, giving Boone room to separate pitchers, combine workloads and avoid treating every starter’s turn as fixed. A Sept. 22 doubleheader against Tampa Bay adds another scheduling pressure point later in the month.
The first sign of how New York intends to use that flexibility is now coming into view.
Fried and Warren become the first test case
Boone said the Yankees plan to start Fried on Friday in San Diego and are likely to use Will Warren behind him, creating a planned piggyback rather than a conventional starter-to-bullpen sequence.
Fried threw 63 pitches over 3 2/3 innings in his return from the injured list Saturday against Boston. Warren threw seven innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts the next day in a 16-1 win over the Red Sox.
Boone made clear that Warren could follow Fried rather than wait for another traditional start.
“We’ll have Max go Friday, [and] we’ll probably have Will go behind him,” Boone said.
Fried is 4-4 with a 2.80 ERA through 16 starts and 90 innings. His elbow has already forced two absences, giving the Yankees reason to build him carefully.
Warren enters the Padres series 9-6 with a 4.23 ERA in 134 innings, with 133 strikeouts and 46 walks.
Warren’s role may be changing before October
The larger question is what follows Friday.
Warren has made 26 starts among his 27 appearances, but the Yankees have several starters they could prioritize in a postseason series. Cole, Fried, Carlos Rodon and Cam Schlittler give Boone different matchup options, while Rodríguez provides another arm capable of taking a turn.
That makes Warren a logical candidate to move between roles without removing him from the staff’s core plans.
A piggyback appearance can serve as a controlled test. Warren can enter with a clean inning, provide multiple frames and reduce the exposure of a starter who is still building strength. Boone has not announced a permanent bullpen move, and Warren could slide back into the rotation afterward.
Six starters give Yankees a September laboratory
The workload spread shows why the Yankees can experiment.
Warren has carried 134 innings. Fried has only 90 because of his elbow interruptions. Rodríguez has logged 23 major league innings and owns a 4.70 ERA after allowing four runs in 3 2/3 innings during Monday’s 10-1 loss to the Angels.
Keeping Rodríguez on the roster gives Boone another length option instead of forcing every short start onto the bullpen. It also makes the Fried-Warren pairing look less like an isolated workaround and more like the beginning of a broader workload map.
Boone indicated that the Yankees expect more combinations.
“We’ll probably have some piggyback scenarios coming up,” Boone said.
After the Padres series, New York has an off day before opening a home series against Colorado on Sept. 8. The doubleheader against the Rays later in the month will create another need for extra starting innings.
Padres series could clarify postseason pitching pecking order
The Yankees still need answers before any September experiment becomes an October plan.
Fried must show that his elbow can handle a rising pitch count. Warren must show that his strong Boston outing was more than a one-start correction. Rodríguez must prove he can give New York dependable innings.
The bullpen is part of the calculation. Fried’s first game back required 5 1/3 relief innings, and Cole’s Tuesday start required another 3 2/3. A planned multi-inning arm behind a limited starter could keep Boone from burning several relievers in one night.
That is the value of the roadmap. It is not simply about choosing a fifth starter. It is about deciding how many innings each arm should carry and which pitchers can shift roles without losing effectiveness.
The Yankees spent most of 2026 trying to assemble a healthy rotation. With the postseason race entering its final month, Boone now has enough starting depth to reshape it.
Friday in San Diego will provide the first clear look at how far that reshaping might go.

This is more to see if Warren can come out io the pen. Right now, both he and Ryan Weathers are SP5 and SP6, you can pick the order. And I believe Yarbrough will be there to back up Rodriguez, if they choose to keep it a 5 man rotation and just give Vole a week off due to the off days.
