Yankees bloodied, battered 12-6 in one of most horrible nights in franchise history

The jeers weren’t reserved for the home team this time. They rang throughout Citi Field, aimed squarely at a New York Yankees squad that’s fallen from grace in spectacular fashion. Saturday’s 12-6 shellacking by the Mets wasn’t just another loss — it was a complete capitulation that showcased everything wrong with this Yankees team.

The Mets (52-38) locked up the Subway Series with their fourth consecutive victory. Meanwhile, the Yankees (48-41) stumbled to their sixth straight defeat, looking every bit like a team in free fall.

Defensive disasters doom Yankees

The Yankees’ defense crumbled from the first pitch onward. Jasson Domínguez lost a routine fly ball in the opening frame. Jazz Chisholm Jr. sailed a throw over everyone’s head in the second inning, handing the Mets a free run. Trent Grisham’s fielding error in the seventh let another runner cross the plate.

These weren’t flukes. They were symptoms of a team that’s lost its way completely.

Chisholm, still adjusting to third base, made his second error in consecutive games. Grisham’s seventh-inning blunder sparked a four-run Mets explosion that transformed a close 7-5 game into a rout.

Judge bloodied in freak accident

The Yankees’ season of misfortune reached a new low between innings. Anthony Volpe’s errant throw struck Aaron Judge near the eye as players jogged off the field after the fifth inning. The team captain never saw it coming and later appeared with a white bandage beneath his right eye.

Judge avoided serious injury, but the incident perfectly captured this team’s current state. Even routine activities have become dangerous for the Yankees.

“Just got to play better. That’s what it comes down to. It’s fundamentals,” Judge said afterward.

Rodon’s struggles continue

Carlos Rodon provided no answers on the mound. The veteran starter surrendered six earned runs across five innings, beginning with Brandon Nimmo’s first-inning grand slam. Rodón showed visible frustration, throwing his hands up after a ball dropped in left-center field.

“I want every ball caught,” Rodón said. “But it was one of those in-between balls.”

The problems extended beyond fielding support. Rodón walked three batters and left multiple sliders hanging over the plate. Pete Alonso crushed one of those mistakes for a two-run homer in the fifth.

Rookie reliever Jayvien Sandridge endured a nightmare MLB debut. He allowed a three-run homer, issued two walks, and hit a batter in a brief but devastating appearance.

Boone acknowledges team’s struggles

Manager Aaron Boone couldn’t hide his frustration after another dismal performance.

“It’s been a terrible week,” Boone admitted. “We’ve clearly made too many mistakes while we’re struggling a little bit on the mound. We’ve got to be better in all facets.”

Injuries continue mounting. Boone confirmed Clarke Schmidt will “likely” need Tommy John surgery, effectively ending his 2025 season. The bullpen has posted an alarming 11.65 ERA over the past six games, leaving the Yankees’ pitching depth severely compromised.

Power surge wasted

The Yankees managed three more home runs — from Chisholm, Austin Wells, and Volpe — giving them seven long balls in two games. The offensive explosion has been meaningless, though. Yankees pitching has allowed 48 runs over the past six contests, while defensive lapses have magnified every mistake.

Cody Bellinger contributed a two-run double, but the Yankees couldn’t match the Mets’ suddenly potent offense.

“These are the moments that build character within a team,” Boone said, “and also help you find out and define what the heck you need moving forward.”

Urgency sets in

Sunday’s series finale offers limited hope. Max Fried takes the mound against a Mets bullpen game, giving the Yankees their best pitcher on full rest. Anything short of dominance will only deepen the crisis.

The Yankees have lost 16 of their last 22 games. Their seven-game AL East lead from late May has evaporated. The standings are tightening, injuries are mounting, and fan patience is wearing thin.

“It sucks,” Boone said bluntly. “It hurts. But you’ve got to be able to handle it.”

The Yankees remain in playoff position for now. But if recent performances — the Judge incident, Rodón’s struggles, defensive breakdowns — indicate anything, their margin for error has disappeared. Without immediate changes, this summer won’t be remembered for October baseball, but for how quickly championship dreams turned to dust.
