By choosing Anthony Volpe as their starting shortstop at the conclusion of spring training, the Yankees indicated their commitment to providing him with an extended opportunity in the role.

On the final day of camp, general manager Brian Cashman, expressed the Yankees’ firm commitment to Anthony Volpe as the starting shortstop, emphasizing their determination to give him the opportunity to excel in that position.

Over the course of the Yankees‘ initial 61 games this season, Anthony Volpe has experienced a wide range of successes and challenges, with a recent trend leaning toward the latter.

However, in the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, Anthony Volpe found himself connecting with a fastball and launching it with immense power, resulting in a crucial two-run homer that provided the Yankees with a comfortable margin in their 4-1 victory. This was a statement of his talent that is capable to overcome challenges.

Anthony Volpe has the ammo

Despite struggling in his previous 17 games with a 6-for-56 performance and 22 strikeouts, Anthony Volpe rebounded impressively on, recording a two-hit game and delivering a crucial home run in a clutch situation. This performance reaffirmed the Yankees’ confidence in his ability to handle the challenges and setbacks that come with being a professional baseball player.

According to Aaron Judge, who has been supporting and mentoring Anthony Volpe since spring training, it was expected that there would be challenges and setbacks when he was called up. However, Judge believes that the organization had confidence in Anthony Volpe’s ability to face adversity and confront it directly. Throughout the season, Anthony Volpe has demonstrated impressive resilience and determination, which Judge finds admirable and inspiring. Being a witness to Anthony Volpe’s performance has been a rewarding experience for Judge and the team.

Yankees' Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo pour ice on Anthony Volpe, who hit the winning run against Baltimore at Yankee Stadium on May 24, 20223.

As the team enjoyed their day off on Monday, Anthony Volpe’s season statistics stood at a batting average of .193, an on-base percentage of .268, and a slugging percentage of .363. He has recorded nine home runs, 72 strikeouts, 21 walks, and 13 stolen bases (with the last steal occurring on May 13), all within the span of 61 games.

The challenges are there

Since the initial month of the season, Anthony Volpe’s walk rate has experienced a decline, while he has displayed a combination of outstanding defense and a team-leading seven errors. Nonetheless, the Yankees have found solace in his resilience and positive response to the challenges and learning experiences he has encountered.

Manager Aaron Boone expressed his admiration for Anthony Volpe’s ability to bounce back in the face of adversity, acknowledging his contributions to the team’s victories. Despite occasional struggles at the plate and defensive lapses, Anthony Volpe has consistently displayed resilience and a determination to find his way in the game, which Boone finds both enjoyable and inspiring to witness.

The statistics provide evidence of Anthony Volpe’s ability to deliver in crucial situations.

When the game is on the line in the late innings, Anthony Volpe has shown his ability to come through. In those high-pressure situations, he boasts an impressive .314 batting average (11-for-35), a .963 OPS, and has struck out nine times in 36 plate appearances.

Among the position players on the Yankees, his Wins Above Replacement (WAR) of 1.0, as calculated by Baseball Reference, places him in the fourth position.

In addition to the weight of being the Yankees’ starting shortstop at the age of 22, the attention surrounding Anthony Volpe has intensified recently due to Oswald Peraza‘s impressive performance at Triple-A, where he has hit 10 home runs in his past 17 games.

Last week, the Yankees made the decision to demote struggling rookie Oswaldo Cabrera to Triple-A, but he quickly returned to the team just two days later due to an injury.

However, staying true to his character, Anthony Volpe expressed that he wasn’t bothered by any of those factors. He emphasized the challenges of playing the game and shared his focus on daily preparation and giving his best effort.
