New York – As the trade deadline inches closer, the New York Yankees may be making their boldest push yet toward postseason supremacy. The target could be Blue Jays infielder Bo Bichette and the proposed trade to include a potential multi-player blockbuster.

The proposal centers around a three-player package—Will Warren, Everson Pereira, and Oswald Peraza—in exchange for Bichette, who is in his final year of arbitration and could become a free agent this winter.

A bid for October firepower

For the Yankees, the motivation is clear. New York sits atop the AL East standings as of mid-June, but postseason depth remains a concern—particularly in the infield. Aging DJ LeMahieu has struggled with consistency following injury delays, and Jazz Chisholm’s recurrent exits caste questions on the Yankees’ infield.

Oswaldo Cabrera sidelined indefinitely, the club lacks both consistency and offensive alternative at third and second base.

Enter Bo Bichette, a two-time All-Star and former AL hits leader, who despite a down 2024 has rebounded modestly in 2025. Through June 14, the 26-year-old is hitting .268 with a .312 OBP and eight home runs. Though his OPS (.726) lags behind his career average, Bichette remains a high-contact bat (79 hits) with above-average sprint speed and a proven track record in the division. He can play both at shortstop and second base filling the Yankees’ infield needs.

“Bo is a gamer, plain and simple,” said one AL scout. “Even in a quieter year, he makes the lineup tougher, he extends innings, and he plays with confidence. You want guys like that in October. He fits a lineup like the Yankees’ because he doesn’t chase homers—he manufactures offense.”

The Yankees would be acquiring Bichette as a rental, with his contract set to expire after the 2025 season. That dynamic lowers his price from previous years, but it also makes the timing crucial. If Toronto senses they are out of the race by early July, cashing in before Bichette walks for nothing could make sense. A Bronx commonality and success could help re-sign him avoiding competition.

Toronto’s inflection point

The Blue Jays entered 2025 with postseason aspirations but have floundered. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is secured with a 14-year, $500 million deal, they have little appetite to sign Bichette to another mega deal. The 27-year-old infielder is coming off a down year and Toronto expects heavy competition to re-sign him.

Reports already indicate that the Blue Jays are considering Andres Gimenez, Will Wagner, and Orelvis Martinez as long-term substitutes for Bichette.

According to league insiders, the inclusion of three MLB rookies from the Yankees would appeal to a Blue Jays team that needs to reload, not necessarily rebuild.

Will Warren is a right-hander who’s posted a 4.86 ERA across 63 innings for the Yankees. His four-pitch mix and advanced command have shown worth in a 4-3 record and he is likely to jump up with experience.

Everson Pereira, once a top-100 prospect, has bounced back to post a .259/.353/.494 slash line this year in Triple-A. Still just 24, his power-speed blend and cannon arm give him everyday upside.

Oswald Peraza, now 24, remains an elite defender on the infield. His bat has stalled in limited MLB opportunities, but he’s hit .188 in his last seven games for the Yankees and may benefit from a fresh start.

From Toronto’s vantage point, this return provides controllable, near-ready pieces that align with a soft retool strategy without bottoming out.

“The Blue Jays need cost-controlled pieces with upside,” said a Toronto-based baseball analyst. “Warren can help their rotation now, and both Pereira and Peraza could be in their 2026 Opening Day lineup. For a player they likely won’t extend, that’s not a bad return.”

Yankees’ 40-man crunch creates opportunity

A trade of this kind also helps the Yankees with looming 40-man roster decisions. Warren and Peraza are already on the MLB roster. Pereira is part of the 40-man roster. Peraza has exhausted his minor options, and it is impacting the Yankees’ roster flexibility.

Rather than risk losing talent for nothing, flipping depth for a front-line starter makes logistical sense for the Yankees.

General manager Brian Cashman has already shown a willingness to get creative. With top prospects like Spencer Jones and Jasson Dominguez remaining off-limits in trade talks, this kind of mid-tier package fits the club’s blueprint.

Concerns, but calculated risks

Of course, Bichette is not without concerns. His defensive metrics have long been questioned last season, and his .977 fielding percentage is not very encouraging this year. Yet the Yankees may be willing to take that gamble, especially with Volpe at shortstop and he is taking over the second base.

From a contractual standpoint, Bichette is a pure rental. That reality lessens the return value somewhat, and Toronto may prefer to deal him now rather than gamble on draft-pick compensation through a qualifying offer.

The biggest question hovering over the talks is whether New York is comfortable surrendering three controllable assets for a short-term upgrade. None of the players involved are considered top-tier prospects, but all hold 40-man value and future roster importance.

However, if the Yankees believe Bichette could be a difference-maker in a tight October series, they may be willing to overpay in volume instead of giving up elite names like Spencer Jones or Chase Hampton.

Club insiders say no contract extension talks have taken place with Bichette’s camp yet, but if the Yankees believe there’s mutual interest in a long-term future, the deal becomes easier to justify.

The bigger concern lies in timing. If the Yankees wait too long, other suitors could jump in—teams like the Dodgers, Mariners, or Giants, all of whom need infield help and have deep farm systems.

Could this be the spark or the setback?

If completed, the trade could mirror the Yankees’ acquisition of Anthony Rizzo in 2021 or even Sonny Gray in 2017—deals that came with high hopes but varied postseason outcomes.

Still, there’s a reason New York is circling this moment. Aaron Judge is healthy and producing. Max Fried is throwing fire. Paul Goldschmidt is on a re-emergence. The Yankees see 2025 as a window—and Bo Bichette could be a key to maximizing it.

As one Yankees insider put it:

“It’s not just about winning the division. It’s about being dangerous in October. Bichette gets them closer to that.”

Should the deal progress, it would mark one of the rare intra-division trades involving a star-level player. It would also signal that the Yankees—despite losing Soto this past offseason—are still chasing excellence through aggression, not hesitation.

The Yankees will continue to monitor Toronto’s position in the standings over the next two weeks. If the Jays fall further back, the front office may finally pull the trigger and send their franchise shortstop to the Bronx.

Go for it! But keep him at shortstop. Volpe has had plenty of time and opportunity and it has worked yet sporadically. It’s time to sit Volpe down since he can’t be sent down. Maybe even trade Volpe, I don’t know. But Bichett is a good deal to pursue if Cashnan has the guts. Alec Bohm of the Phillies would be another worthwhike look.
