NEW YORK — CC Sabathia never needed another reason to remember Fenway Park. The former Yankees ace spent years pitching beneath its imposing left-field wall, facing a Boston lineup and a crowd that could make even an ordinary summer game feel like October.

For the Yankees left-hander, the stadium was the setting for some of the defining pressure of his 19-year major league career. Yet the memories Sabathia has carried away from Boston have never been limited to competition. His relationship with the ballpark has also involved questions about how visiting players are treated, both inside and outside the lines.

That distinction matters because Sabathia is not someone who has dismissed the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry itself. In a June 2026 interview with the Boston Globe, he recalled the weight of his first season in New York and said he enjoyed the rivalry when both clubs were strong.

Now a Hall of Famer, Sabathia remains a blunt voice on the game he played. His newest comments about Boston draw attention to a less visible side of a landmark that generations of baseball fans celebrate: the conditions experienced by opposing players who must work there.

This time, his complaint was not about a blown call, a hostile hitter or a painful loss. It was about the building itself.

Sabathia turns spotlight toward Fenway’s visiting quarters

During an appearance on the Section 10 podcast, Sabathia criticized the ballpark’s cramped clubhouse and described water as a problem in the facility. His language was unmistakably harsh.

“Fenway. F—— hate Fenway. That place is terrible. It’s like water everywhere. The clubhouse is tiny. That place is terrible,” Sabathia said.

The remarks bring a longstanding clubhouse issue into focus. A 2019 account by a visiting baseball writer described Fenway’s opposing-team quarters as low-ceilinged, crowded and obstructed by support columns. Such complaints predate Sabathia’s latest appearance and are not unique to the Yankees.

Fenway opened in 1912 and has been repeatedly updated while preserving much of its original footprint. Research compiled by the Society for American Baseball Research describes the challenges of balancing the park’s historic character with the demands of modern baseball.

That is a different question from whether Fenway’s atmosphere makes it a special place to play. One concerns baseball history and the spectators who fill the stands. The other concerns the workplace used by visiting athletes and their support staffs.

The history behind a more personal discomfort

Sabathia’s latest words also carry a history far more serious than a cramped locker room. In May 2017, after Orioles outfielder Adam Jones reported racist abuse at Fenway, Sabathia spoke publicly about racial slurs he said he had encountered in Boston earlier in his career.

Sabathia said he had not experienced the same treatment in his Yankees years because the club provided security around areas such as the bullpen. He described those safeguards while discussing Jones’ experience, distinguishing the conditions he faced with Cleveland from those during his time in New York.

The Red Sox apologized to Jones after that incident, and team officials discussed additional security measures. Sabathia did not make a fresh allegation of racist abuse in his latest podcast comments. His previous statements nevertheless explain why his memories of the venue encompass much more than the standard emotions of a divisional rivalry.

For the Yankees, those earlier remarks also underscore something rarely visible on a television broadcast: security, travel arrangements and clubhouse conditions shape a player’s experience of a road ballpark long before the first pitch.

Why Sabathia can love the rivalry and criticize the ballpark

Sabathia’s position is not as contradictory as it first appears. He has described the intensity of a Yankees start in Boston as a defining professional challenge, even while making clear that he disliked parts of the experience surrounding it.

In his June conversation with the Boston Globe, Sabathia remembered hearing on a cab radio that his first Fenway start as a Yankee in 2009 was being portrayed as the biggest of his career. The recollection was about the weight of the occasion rather than any wish to avoid it.

That distinction provides the clearest measure of the Yankees legend’s latest attack. The former Yankees left-hander can value the competition, acknowledge the park’s place in baseball and still argue that its facilities fall short of what visiting major leaguers should expect.

The Yankees and Red Sox have built their history on dramatic games and fierce public loyalties. Sabathia’s account addresses the private side of those encounters, where the stadium’s reputation offers little comfort to the people preparing to compete.

His recent podcast comments have not changed Fenway’s historic standing. They have revived a question that survives every renovation: how much discomfort should visiting players have to accept in the name of preserving baseball tradition?
