The New York Yankees’ broadcast landscape continues its evolution with Justin Shackil announcing his departure from WFAN-AM/FM’s postgame coverage. The veteran broadcaster revealed his decision to concentrate on television commitments spanning both baseball and boxing coverage.

Yankees’ radio role transition

Through a social media announcement, Shackil announced that his involvement with Yankees radio postgame broadcasts would conclude ahead of the 2025 season. The broadcaster acknowledged that the position demanded consistent dedication, which he could not maintain while pursuing other broadcasting opportunities.

Shackil clarified his ongoing connection with the Yankees organization, indicating his expanded presence on YES Network throughout the upcoming season. His decision reflects a strategic career shift rather than a complete departure from the Bombers’ coverage.

Having joined WFAN in 2023, Shackil initially handled pregame and postgame duties while providing play-by-play coverage when needed. His role expanded considerably during the following season, particularly after John Sterling’s retirement announcement, which led to reduced travel commitments for the longtime voice of the Yankees.

Broadcast team evolution

The midseason transition following Sterling’s 2023 departure prompted WFAN and the Yankees to evaluate multiple broadcasting talents. The rotation included Emmanuel Berbari, Ricky Ricardo, Ryan Ruocco, and Brendan Burke alongside Shackil, whose engaging style and professional approach garnered significant audience appreciation.

The organization recently concluded its search for Sterling’s successor, selecting Dave Sims, previously the Seattle Mariners’ lead broadcaster, for the 2025 season. Sims, who brings extensive experience including previous work with WFAN, joins Suzyn Waldman as the primary play-by-play voice. This appointment provided additional context for Shackil’s strategic career decision.

Media versatility

Shackil established himself as a multifaceted presence across New York sports media platforms. His contributions to YES Network encompassed both live game coverage and pregame content, demonstrating adaptability across broadcasting formats. Industry recognition of his comprehensive approach and analytical depth enhanced his value across multiple platforms.

Michael Kay, the Yankees’ lead television broadcaster, expressed support for Shackil’s decision through social media, highlighting the broadcaster’s professionalism and suggesting promising developments in his career trajectory.

Fan community response

The announcement generated a significant response from both supporters and media colleagues, who recognized Shackil’s contributions to Yankees radio coverage. His approach to postgame analysis, combining technical insight with conversational accessibility, resonated strongly with the audience.

While his radio presence diminishes, Shackil’s continued involvement with YES Network maintains his connection with the Yankees community. Though specific details about future television projects remain undisclosed, his announcement suggests expanding opportunities.

Radio coverage evolution

The integration of Dave Sims into the Yankees radio team signals a fresh direction for WFAN’s coverage. Sims brings narrative expertise and a distinctive vocal presence to the role, complementing Suzyn Waldman’s established perspective. Their partnership promises to maintain broadcasting excellence while introducing contemporary elements.

The broadcast team’s restructuring preserves essential continuity while accommodating emerging talent. The combination of Sims, Waldman, and supporting broadcasters ensures comprehensive coverage throughout the season.

Broadcasting excellence

Shackil’s transition reflects a broader evolution in sports media coverage. His capacity to engage audiences while providing substantive analysis exemplifies modern broadcasting requirements. Though departing from radio duties, his expanded television role ensures continued contributions to Yankees coverage.

His farewell message expressed appreciation for opportunities with WFAN and the Yankees organization while anticipating future developments. As the 2025 season approaches, Shackil’s radio presence will be missed, though his YES Network role maintains his connection with the Yankees community. His career trajectory continues upward, while the Yankees’ broadcasting tradition advances with established and emerging voices.
