A compelling narrative bridging sports, community, and artistic expression unfolds as Bay Area musician LaRussell Thomas assumes the lead role in Vallejo, a film chronicling baseball legend CC Sabathia‘s formative years with the 1989 North Vallejo Little League All-Stars. The project illuminates Sabathia’s early life in the North Bay community before his ascent to baseball prominence.
The narrative centers on youth, friendship, and perseverance in a close-knit community. Thomas, establishing himself in the Bay Area music landscape, views the project as both professional advancement and community tribute.
Bringing a local legend to life

“I remember growing up and seeing CC on Toyota Vallejo commercials, and I thought that was so dope back then for him to be from here,” Thomas shared with The Chronicle. “It means a lot to me just to be able to represent someone who made it from here. We don’t get success stories that often, and he’s one who went all the way.”
Sabathia’s recent Baseball Hall of Fame induction, securing 86.8% of first-ballot votes, reinforces his legacy. His 19-year MLB career yielded 251 victories and 3,093 strikeouts, positioning him among just 15 pitchers achieving both milestones.
The production unites GTG Studios, Sabathia’s Grapefruit Media, The Unreasnble, and Creative Control. Directors Coodie and Chike, recognized for their jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy documentary, lead the creative vision, promising authentic representation of Vallejo’s community and culture.
LaRussell’s expanding artistic journey
The film marks Thomas’s acting debut, broadening his creative scope. His musical prominence in the Bay Area stems from introspective lyricism and community engagement. A November NPR Tiny Desk Concert appearance showcased his artistic evolution, leading to his current role as a Tiny Desk Contest judge.
Thomas emphasizes local involvement in the production process, committing to employment opportunities for Vallejo residents. “I’m excited to employ people from our community,” he said. “When we start full production, we have to employ people from Vallejo and give people that I grew up with opportunities to be in a film that represents their city and their culture.”
“We haven’t got to see our city on the big screen yet, and I don’t know why, but it’s overdue,” he noted. “It’s my goal to make sure we get it more and more.”
Narrative core

Vallejo transcends sports biography, exploring themes of community resilience and collective support. The story follows the North Vallejo Little League All-Stars through formative experiences that shaped Sabathia’s development.
Amber Sabathia’s involvement through Grapefruit Media adds a personal dimension to the production. The project aims to resonate beyond baseball enthusiasts, speaking to universal themes of aspiration and achievement.
The timing aligns with Sabathia’s Hall of Fame recognition, as he attributes his success to his Vallejo foundations—a central theme the film explores.
Cultural impact
The production positions Vallejo for increased cultural recognition, highlighting a community that has produced significant talent across disciplines. Thomas views the project as an opportunity to reshape narratives and inspire future generations.
His community engagement extends through various artistic initiatives, and organizing events fostering creative collaboration. Vallejo represents an expansion of these efforts, combining storytelling and community celebration.
Production anticipation builds around this emotional narrative. Thomas approaches the role as an opportunity to honor Sabathia’s legacy while exploring new artistic territory. For Sabathia, the project enables community reinvestment and inspiration.
The collaboration between accomplished filmmakers and authentic community voices positions Vallejo for significant impact beyond sports biography. It celebrates community resilience and shared achievement, bringing deserved attention to an often-overlooked story.
As LaRussell put it: “It’s my goal to make sure we get [our city] on the big screen more and more.” With Vallejo, that goal is one step closer to becoming a reality.
