The Yankees have been strongly linked to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Japanese pitcher recently made available by the Orix Buffaloes. On Monday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today expressed confidence that the standout right-handed pitcher would end up in the Bronx.
According to his interview on“Foul Territory,” the Yankees are the team most interested in Yamamoto. He stated that the Japanese ace is the opposite of Ohtani, who seeks the spotlight and embraces the limelight. Nightengale suggested that the competition for the pitcher is primarily between the Yankees and the Dodgers, though he didn’t rule out the Mets due to their location in New York. However, he said he found it hard to imagine Yamamoto signing with any other team.
Yamamoto is the center of everyone’s attention

This season, Yamamoto put up impressive numbers with an ERA of 1.21, a WHIP of 0.88, and a remarkable 169 strikeouts in 164 innings. The 25-year-old achieved his third consecutive season with an ERA under 2 and won his third Eiji Sawamura Award, the Japanese equivalent of the Cy Young Award.
Upon entering free agency, Yamamoto is expected to demand a contract worth at least $200 million. At 5 p.m. on January 4, we’ll find out if the current Yankees live up to the legacy of a team known for entering the free-agent market with a combination of history, confidence, and financial clout, effortlessly securing any player they desire.
By the end of the first week of the new year, the Yankees will either face Yamamoto and Juan Soto or have to accept the dawn of a new era, marked as much by Brian Cashman as by “Before Collapse.”

This marks the erosion of the perception of the Yankees’ greatness, mystique, and aura. The decline has been steady for years, most notably epitomized six years ago when they mistakenly believed they were the favorites to sign Shohei Ohtani, only for him to rule them out as contenders for his services. The Yankees responded with a panic move to Giancarlo Stanton, which led to a gradual decline to a record of 82-80 and their toughest season in three decades. Today, they are increasingly aware that they can no longer take it for granted that they will achieve the desired results.
The Yankees are ahead of the Mets
Although rival teams are suggesting that the Mets are one of the top contenders to sign Japanese ace Yamamoto, there is a widespread belief that this outcome is by no means certain, especially considering that numerous teams with deep pockets are also vying for his services.

The Mets aren’t taking anything for granted and are actively exploring other free-agent pitchers, such as Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, and Eduardo Rodríguez. As they weigh their options, there appears to be a possible leaning toward Snell.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are optimistic about acquiring Yamamoto, but so far, they’ve only been linked to former Yankee Montgomery as a top pitching option.
