Yankees’ next generation of sluggers features 14 breakout power bats worth watching

NEW YORK — The Yankees have spent two winters emptying shelves. Prospect after prospect went out the door in deals for veterans, the price of a roster built to win now. Each trade thinned a farm system that once ranked among baseball’s deepest.

That approach carried a cost. A contending club needs a steady supply of cheap, controllable talent, both to fill holes and to fund the next trade. When the well runs dry, every deadline gets harder and every roster gap gets more expensive to patch.

So the quiet story of this season has unfolded far from Yankee Stadium, in the box scores of Tampa, Hudson Valley, Somerset and the Dominican Summer League. There, a wave of young hitters has started to refill what the trades drained. The names are unfamiliar. The production is not.

For general manager Brian Cashman and his scouting staff, the timing matters. The Yankees sit second in the AL East, chasing Tampa Bay and holding a postseason spot, with a big league roster that still leans on veterans. A rebuilt base of hitting prospects changes the math on how the club builds its next contender.

A systemwide surge in the box scores

The development is measurable. Fourteen hitters in the Yankees’ minor league system have posted an OPS of at least .797 this season, according to a Sept. 7 reporting snapshot drawn from official MiLB statistics. Six of them have cleared .900. Two have topped 1.000.

The group is not a single draft class or one loaded affiliate. For the Yankees, it spans international signings, recent draft picks, former trade returns and players who have already climbed to Double-A. That spread is what gives the surge weight. It is depth, not a lone standout.

A caveat belongs up front. Fourteen strong lines do not equal 14 future major leaguers. Rookie-ball numbers do not carry the meaning of Double-A numbers, and none of these figures are park- or league-adjusted. What the group gives the Yankees is options, a wider pool to develop, promote or trade.

Pena and De Pena headline the youngest tier

Two teenagers anchor the top of the list. Yostin Pena, an 18-year-old outfielder signed in December 2025, has hit .354 with a .431 on-base percentage and a .608 slugging mark across 61 games between the Dominican Summer League and Single-A Tampa. His 1.039 OPS comes with 14 home runs, 80 RBIs and 37 stolen bases, a rare power-speed blend for his age.

Wilberson De Pena, 19, has turned a modest trade into a coup for the Yankees. Acquired from the Angels in the July 2025 deal that sent Oswald Peraza to Los Angeles, he has hit .312 with 20 homers, 77 RBIs, 25 steals and a .968 OPS. He swept the Florida Complex League’s Most Valuable Player and Top MLB Prospect awards after leading the circuit in average, slugging and OPS.

De Pena’s power was historic for the level. One analyst framed the rarity in stark terms during his FCL run, and the note captures why scouts took notice.

“Every Complex League hitter since 2006 to hit at least 12 homers with a <20% strikeout rate: 2026 Wilberson De Pena,” analyst Gabriel Pena wrote on social media, ending the list at one name.

The context sharpens the point. De Pena set the FCL home run record and vaulted onto MLB Pipeline’s Yankees Top 30, a swing in value from a player few noticed when the trade was made.

The advanced bats carry the clearer path

Ceiling is one measure. Proximity is another. Several hitters higher up the ladder offer the Yankees a more immediate read on who can actually help in the Bronx.

Jackson Lovich, a 2025 16th-round pick, has produced one of the system’s most balanced seasons. The 22-year-old infielder is batting .287 with 24 home runs, 89 RBIs, 41 steals and an .873 OPS, and he earned a promotion from Tampa to High-A Hudson Valley on July 28.

Core Jackson has climbed the furthest. The 22-year-old shortstop, a 2025 fifth-round pick, has hit .261 with 13 homers, 40 steals and an .822 OPS, reaching Double-A Somerset on Aug. 11. His defensive versatility and speed give him arguably the clearest near-term route to the Bronx, even if his bat is still developing.

Roderick Arias, who turns 22 on Wednesday, has steadied a once-uneven career. The switch-hitting shortstop, signed for $4 million in 2022 as the top international prospect in his class, has hit .270 with 16 homers, 80 RBIs, 36 steals and a .797 OPS. The production does not erase old questions, but it gives the Yankees firmer footing to judge him.

The number no one else is highlighting

Here is the figure that reframes the group, and it is not the gaudiest OPS. It is the stolen-base total spread across the list. Pena has 37 steals, Lovich 41, Core Jackson 40, Arias 36 and Stiven Marinez 39, a teenage DSL hitter with a .989 OPS. Five of the 14 have swiped at least 36 bases.

That pattern is not incidental. The Yankees have leaned into speed and athleticism in recent international and draft classes, and the farm now reflects it. In an era of larger bases and pickoff limits, a system stocked with plus runners who also hit for power is built for the modern game. It is a quiet philosophical shift showing up all at once in the numbers.

A development-or-trade calculation, not a fire sale

None of this means the Yankees are shopping the group. There are no confirmed trade discussions involving these hitters. What the surge creates is leverage and choice.

The depth clusters by position, which forces decisions. Pena, De Pena, Wilson Rodriguez and Jace Avina give the Yankees a stack of outfielders. Lovich, Jackson, Arias, Escudero, Marinez, Matic and Potestio form a crowded infield pool. Not all can advance together.

Anthony Potestio owns the group’s top OPS at 1.197, but the 11th-round 2026 pick has just 57 professional at-bats, a hot start rather than a proven breakout. David McCann has 17 homers and a .904 OPS at High-A, while Eric Genther, carrying a .407 OBP, went on the seven-day injured list Sept. 3. Each line needs more time and higher competition to read clearly.

The Yankees have already shown how they value a player they believe in. They resisted trade interest in George Lombard Jr. at the deadline, then promoted him to the majors, where he debuted Aug. 4. The next task is deciding which of these 14 bats earn that patience and which become currency for established talent. Their coming promotions will settle how much the Yankees can lean on this group.
