In a move that brings both depth and a sense of nostalgia, the New York Yankees have acquired former National League MVP Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs. The trade, finalized on Tuesday evening, not only strengthens the Yankees’ roster but also establishes a rare father-son legacy within the franchise.

A rare Yankees legacy: Father-son duos

Cody Bellinger becomes part of just the fourth father-son duo to play for the Yankees, following in the footsteps of his father, Clay Bellinger, who was a key contributor during the franchise's late 1990s and early 2000s dynasties.

Cody Bellinger, a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove recipient, joins the Yankees nearly two decades after his father, Clay Bellinger, contributed to the team’s success during their late-1990s and early-2000s dynasty. By donning the iconic pinstripes, Cody and Clay Bellinger become only the fourth father-son duo in Yankees history.

Cody reflected on how childhood memories of his father’s time with the Yankees influenced his decision:

“I have small memories of the kids’ playroom that I would go to during the games. I have small memories of the house that we lived in upstate,” Bellinger said on Friday. “My mom did a great job with the camcorder, so we would watch replays of it growing up, and it helps me remember what we were doing out there when I was 5 or 6,” he shared in an interview with Brian Hoch of MLB.com.

Clay Bellinger played as a utilityman for the Yankees from 1999 to 2001, a period marked by back-to-back World Series titles. Though Clay’s career stats were modest—posting a .194 batting average with 12 home runs over 343 plate appearances—his contributions were often pivotal. One of his most notable moments came during Game 2 of the 2000 World Series when he made a game-saving catch at the wall, helping the Yankees secure a critical win over the Mets en route to their 26th championship.

Cody’s Bellinger expectations in the Bronx

Cody Bellinger enters the Yankees’ lineup with the potential to fill multiple roles. His versatility as an outfielder and first baseman gives the Yankees flexibility as they address positional needs. With Aaron Judge likely returning to right field, Bellinger is a candidate for center field. Alternatively, he could handle left field or provide depth at first base.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing wherever the team needs me,” Bellinger said. “Whether it’s left, center, or first base, I’m here to help the team win.”

The 29-year-old brings experience and a left-handed bat to a lineup looking to rebound from last season. In 2024, he batted .266/.325/.426 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs. While these numbers represent a slight decline from his 2023 resurgence, Bellinger’s ability to adapt could make him a key asset in the hitter-friendly confines of Yankee Stadium.

As the Yankees prepare for the 2025 season, Bellinger’s addition signals their intent to build a competitive roster. Beyond his versatility, his left-handed power is expected to play well at Yankee Stadium, where the short porch in right field has long been favorable to pull hitters.

“It’s an honor to wear the same uniform my dad did,” Bellinger said. “I’m excited to create my own moments and contribute to the Yankees’ tradition.”

With two years remaining on his contract, Cody has time to leave his mark on the team, much like his father did years ago. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely, hoping for the Bellingers to deliver another chapter of October magic in the Bronx.
