Yankees prospect Jasson Dominguez is facing questions about his future with the team while stirring controversy off the field with his new look. The 21-year-old outfielder appeared sporting a beard, drawing attention to the Yankees’ long-standing facial hair policy amid ongoing speculation about his role in the 2025 roster.

The Yankees’ grooming policy, which has been in place since 1976, prohibits beards and mandates clean-shaven appearances for players. Dominguez’s facial hair ignited reactions on social media, with fans weighing in on both his new look and the policy itself.

“Looks like Kyren Williams,” one fan quipped on social media, drawing over 240 likes. Another post criticized the Yankees’ grooming rules, stating, “The Yankees need to get rid of that beard rule. Let players be themselves. It’s a new generation.”

The policy has faced criticism in recent years, with some arguing it’s outdated. Former Yankee Cameron Maybin has publicly called the rule “wack,” claiming it may deter free agents from joining the team. Meanwhile, other fans supported the tradition, viewing it as part of the Yankees’ storied identity.

Beyond the grooming controversy, Dominguez’s focus remains on proving his value on the field. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman recently addressed the expectations surrounding the team’s top prospect.

“I’d like to see Dominguez get his shot now,” Cashman said in an interview with the New York Post. “He’s young. He’s got to earn it and retain it.”

Dominguez’s MLB debut in 2024 showcased his potential, though his numbers left room for growth. Over 26 games, he struggled to make a consistent impact. However, his .314 batting average and .880 OPS in 58 minor-league games last season highlight his upside.

Yankees’ roster moves add pressure

The Yankees’ offseason moves, including the completed signing of Cody Bellinger and their pursuit of Pete Alonso, have intensified competition for roster spots. The addition of Alonso, one of MLB’s top power hitters, would bolster the Yankees’ lineup but could also limit opportunities for Dominguez.

If Dominguez delivers on his five-tool potential, he could play a crucial role in replacing Juan Soto’s production from 2024 and solidify his place in the Yankees’ future plans. For now, he remains a player to watch as the team shapes its roster for the upcoming season.
