NEW YORK — George Lombard Jr. has spent August becoming one of the most watched young players in the Yankees organization.
The 21-year-old shortstop reached the majors on Aug. 4, homered in his debut and quickly moved into a regular role as New York tried to stabilize its infield for the stretch run. His rise has also brought attention to the people closest to him, including another young athlete whose name already carries deep meaning in American sports.
Away from the Yankees clubhouse, Jackie Taylor has been building an athletic identity of her own. The 20-year-old is a junior middle blocker for North Carolina and wears No. 21, the number made famous by her late father, former Washington safety Sean Taylor. UNC lists the Miami native at 1.85 meters. She started every match in each of her first two college seasons and entered 2026 after producing one of the best blocking seasons in school history.
Taylor’s background also reaches beyond volleyball. She is the only child of Sean Taylor and Jackie Garcia-Haley, and she has helped preserve her father’s legacy through community projects and events connected to Washington’s NFL franchise. The Commanders have included her in plans for a statue honoring Sean Taylor, while the Sean Taylor Legacy Project has supported charitable work and gun-violence prevention initiatives. Those responsibilities have made her a public figure independent of Lombard’s rise with the Yankees.
Taylor and Lombard together since early 2025
Taylor is Lombard’s girlfriend, and the public trail of their relationship dates to at least January 2025. Social media photos showed the two embracing at a beach sunset and sharing a paddle board. Lombard also appeared at a North Carolina volleyball match wearing a sweatshirt featuring Taylor’s image.
Taylor included the relationship in an Instagram highlight called “My people,” including a Valentine’s Day photo from 2025.
“I love you,” Taylor wrote.
The couple also appeared together around the January 2025 NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia at an event connected to the Sean Taylor Legacy Project. A photo from the event tagged Lombard and Taylor with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
There are signs the relationship may have started earlier, but no reliable public account establishes an exact date or explains precisely how they met. Both attended Gulliver Prep in Miami. That shared school is the clearest documented link before their relationship became visible online.
When the Yankees promoted Lombard from High-A Hudson Valley to Double-A Somerset in May 2025, Taylor celebrated the move on social media.
“No one more deserving! So proud of you!” Taylor wrote.
Jackie Taylor already a record-setting UNC blocker
UNC’s official records show Taylor started all 31 matches as a sophomore in 2025. She finished with 165 total blocks, the third-highest single-season total in program history, and set a school single-season record with 154 block assists. She also had 149 kills, 44 digs and 29 aces.
North Carolina opened 2026 with consecutive sweeps over Davidson and UNCW. Taylor recorded four kills, two service aces and two solo blocks at Davidson, then added three blocks against UNCW as the Tar Heels improved to 2-0.
The Yankees shortstop has returned that support. On Sunday, Lombard reposted a social media graphic highlighting Taylor’s 165-block season.
One Miami school connects two athletic families
Gulliver Prep is more than a shared line on Taylor and Lombard’s biographies. Taylor’s parents met there before both became University of Miami athletes. Their daughter later attended Gulliver, where she developed into one of Florida’s top volleyball recruits.
Lombard graduated from Gulliver in 2023 before the Yankees selected him 26th overall. His father, George Lombard Sr., played parts of six major league seasons and is now the Detroit Tigers’ bench coach. His mother, Judy Prado Lombard, is a longtime Spanish-language television executive in Miami. His younger brother, Jacob, was the No. 14 pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.
That shared school history does not prove Taylor and Lombard met at Gulliver. It does show their athletic paths crossed the same Miami campus before either became nationally known.
Lombard’s Yankees rise brings new attention
Lombard entered September batting .253 with a .310 on-base percentage, a .367 slugging percentage, two home runs and six RBIs through his first 23 MLB games. He also became the first Yankees shortstop to homer in his first major league game.
The immediate Yankees question is when his right knee will allow him back into the lineup. He sat Sunday against Boston and again Monday in Anaheim. The latest club update listed a possible return on Sept. 1 or Sept. 2.
Taylor, meanwhile, is back in her own season. No. 19 North Carolina is scheduled to host James Madison on Thursday before facing Colorado State on Friday.
For Yankees fans learning her name because of Lombard, the fuller picture is broader than a player’s girlfriend. Taylor is a Division I athlete, the daughter of one of Washington football’s most remembered players and an active steward of that legacy. Her relationship with Lombard links two young athletes whose careers are unfolding on separate national stages.
