While the media spotlight was focused on the New York Yankees’ struggles, Aaron Judge bluntly stated that the team had a lot of issues to address. Other teammates backed him up, and the captain even promised to address the issue with team management. However, Mike Francesa didn’t take it well at all; he disapproved of his comment and told the Yankees’ captain to focus on his game.

“…But the idea that you want the judge to decide who should stay or go—give me a break. … Hey, it’s not your job to judge the players. Your job is to play and lead,” Francesa declared. “…Do your job at the highest level. Do it—without complaining. Lead. Be there for the big game. That’s your job. Your job isn’t to trim the roster.”

French Reporter Tried to Belittle Aaron Judge

After his team was officially eliminated from the postseason race, Aaron Judge had every reason to craft his response to a question about his involvement in the organization’s internal discussions regarding his future. He could have dodged the questions or sidestepped comments about the Yankees’ problems.

However, the Yankees’ captain went so far as to call the season a failure. Aaron Judge showed courage in calling for substantial improvements to have a shot at success in 2024 and promised to discuss the matter with the Yankees’ front office. He emphasized that they had a lot of work ahead of them, such as implementing the necessary changes and addressing various issues within the team.

“We have a lot of work to do, a lot of things to change,” said the Yankees slugger. “There are a lot of things going on here that need to be fixed.”

At a time when media attention is focused on the turmoil within the New York Jets’ football operations, Aaron Judge—with the Yankees’ season nearing its end—called it a “failure.” Throughout this time, he served as a moving reminder of what true leadership entails, especially in the face of adversity. That is precisely why the organization committed to paying him $360 million over nine years.

It’s worth noting that Aaron Judge didn’t mention any vacation or leisure plans. His only goal was to get back to work in a different way. However, there were a few dissenting voices troubled by Aaron Judge’s desire to have a say in the Yankees’ offseason strategy. They argued that he should not meddle in front-office affairs.

Francesa’s criticism of Aaron Judge is misleading

According to Francesa, Aaron Judge should be the one responsible for deciding which players should stay on or leave the team. He suggested that the captain’s main focus should be on playing at a high level and providing leadership—especially during crucial games—rather than getting involved in roster decisions.

Francesa’s attempt to limit Aaron Judge’s leadership solely to on-field performance comes as no surprise. It’s essentially a “shut up and play” directive. He, who once called Aaron Judge’s contract with the Yankees a “bad deal,” has consistently criticized players—especially in the NBA—who use their contractual leverage to influence team decisions.

To suggest that Aaron Judge is involved in such manipulation is wrong and misleading. In fact, the slugger is the one who exposes himself to criticism by actively participating in the organization’s decision-making. If the Yankees’ “new” plan for 2024 falters, fingers could easily point at him for his role in shaping a potentially flawed strategy. There were reports that Aaron Judge played a role in the offseason preparations for the 2023 season, and the results were less than stellar.

Aaron Judge’s track record demonstrates his willingness to take risks. He defied critics who questioned his negotiating strategy when securing his massive contract with the Yankees. Now, he’s showing the entire baseball world that being the Yankees’ captain involves more than just excelling on the field.
