From disappointment to distinction, Carlos Rodon‘s Yankees story now includes a significant chapter of expectation. The veteran southpaw has secured the coveted Opening Day assignment for the 2025 campaign, taking the ball when New York hosts Milwaukee on March 27 at Yankee Stadium.
Rodon’s elevation to the season-opening spotlight comes amid notable absences in the rotation, with Gerrit Cole sidelined for the year following elbow surgery and both Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt battling their own health issues.
Yet this honor represents more than just circumstantial necessity—it’s recognition of Rodon’s impressive turnaround and newfound reliability in pinstripes. His latest outing has generated big expectations from the Yankees fans. But his Bronx tale in the last two years shows these hopes are disproportionate though not out of the blue.
Rodon goes from struggle to strength
Rodon’s inaugural season in New York in 2023 fell dramatically short of expectations. Plagued by injuries and performance issues, he limped to a 3-8 record with a bloated 6.85 ERA—hardly justifying the six-year, $162 million investment the Yankees had made.
The 2024 season, however, witnessed Rodon’s professional resurrection. He delivered 32 starts, compiled a solid 16-9 record with a respectable 3.96 ERA, and played a crucial role in propelling the Yankees to their first World Series appearance since 2009.
Just an honor. Just excited. Just want to go out there and win the game.

Now entrusted with launching the 2025 campaign, Rodon approaches the responsibility with characteristic understatement.
“Just an honor. Just excited. Just want to go out there and win the game,” Rodon told YES Network. “Honestly, it’s just the first game of the season and just another baseball game.”
Spring showcase builds Yankees’ confidence
In his final preseason appearance last Friday, Rodon offered a glimpse of his readiness, delivering 4 2/3 scoreless frames against Detroit in a 4-0 victory. His five-strikeout performance featured an expanded changeup usage—potentially signaling a new weapon to complement his established fastball-slider combination.
The importance of Rodon’s role hasn’t been lost on his battery mate, Austin Wells.
“I think arguably he’s the most important [pitcher in our rotation] right now,” Wells remarked after Friday’s outing. “Last year he was able to complete every start, didn’t miss a start… If he’s able to repeat that for us and give us length and go out there and make quality starts, I think that’s gonna be huge for us.”
Wells particularly highlighted Rodon’s improved ability to establish secondary pitches early in counts, creating advantageous situations for his power offerings later in at-bats.
Boone’s blueprint for success

Yankees skipper Aaron Boone has emphasized reliability over spectacular performances when discussing expectations for Rodon.
“With Carlos, and I remind him of this every now and then, I just want him to focus on going to the post,” Boone explained. “Every fifth or sixth day, focus on that… If you do that, it’s going to add up to good stuff.”
That philosophy aligns perfectly with Rodon’s 2024 performance when he surpassed 180 innings for just the second time in his career. Replicating that durability would provide crucial stability for a rotation facing significant questions beyond its front end.
Evolving rotation hierarchy
While Rodon receives the season’s first assignment, the long-term ace role may ultimately belong to Max Fried, New York’s premier offseason acquisition. Fried, gradually building toward full strength after offseason recovery, figures to assume frontline status as the campaign progresses.

In the meantime, Rodon’s consistency remains vital. Carlos Carrasco and Will Warren are positioned to complete the initial rotation, particularly if Schmidt requires injured list placement to start the year.
This marks Rodon’s second career Opening Day start, following his 2019 assignment with the Chicago White Sox. The context, however, couldn’t be more different—replacing an established ace on a championship contender rather than leading a rebuilding franchise.
The Yankees’ title aspirations face early challenges beyond the rotation. Giancarlo Stanton’s indefinite absence due to elbow complications, DJ LeMahieu’s injured list stint, and Cole’s season-long recovery all narrow the team’s margin for error considerably.
That reality elevates Rodon’s importance exponentially.
“Having the bounce-back year that he did last year, I think that allowed him to kind of re-find out what makes him, him,” Wells told The Show podcast. “That’s just what makes Carlos great… That’s what we do need out of a guy like him this year for sure.”
Can Rodon sustain it?

For Rodon, 2025’s central challenge revolves around maintaining last season’s reliability. Can he deliver another 30-plus starts while maintaining effectiveness? Is he prepared to temporarily fill Cole’s substantial shoes atop the rotation? And can he channel the All-Star caliber performance he previously displayed with San Francisco and Chicago consistently throughout the marathon season?
Affirmative answers to these questions would position Rodon as exactly what the Yankees desperately need—a stabilizing force when uncertainty abounds.
Carlos Rodon’s path to Opening Day 2025 followed no traditional route. After weathering setbacks, enduring criticism, and engineering a career revival, the left-hander has earned this opportunity through perseverance and performance. His ability to capitalize on this moment may well define the Yankees’ early-season trajectory.
