The New York Yankees are confronting a troubling dilemma as power hitter Giancarlo Stanton contends with another health setback, complicating their strategy for the 2025 campaign. Already managing tendon injuries affecting both elbows, Stanton now faces an additional persistent calf problem that further extends his growing list of physical concerns.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that Stanton’s return timeline remains undefined, with the organization concerned he might require season-ending surgical intervention if his elbow conditions fail to improve. While the calf issue isn’t directly extending his absence, it raises fresh questions about his long-term physical reliability and performance.

Though Aaron Boone called it “fairly minor,” this seems chronic and may cause him to play with injury. With the season opener drawing near, the Yankees are preparing for an extended absence from their formidable slugger, a development that further challenges an already injury-depleted roster.

Stanton may return to Yankees action in June

The Yankees, recently dealt a significant blow with ace Gerrit Cole requiring Tommy John surgery, had anticipated Stanton providing middle-order stability in their lineup. However, inside sources indicate that while Memorial Day represents an optimistic target date for his return, a legitimate possibility exists that he might miss the entire 2025 season. So, Yankees fans may expect him to join the action around the first week of June.

At 35, Stanton has battled availability issues throughout his professional career, and despite careful workload management, he continues experiencing recurring physical setbacks. The designated hitter position now presents a significant question for the Yankees, who are evaluating various internal candidates and external possibilities should Stanton face prolonged rehabilitation.

During Stanton’s absence, the Yankees have evaluated Dom Smith, Ben Rice, and J.C. Escarra as potential designated hitter alternatives. Though each has demonstrated power potential, none possesses the dominant slugging capability that a healthy Stanton brings to the lineup.

The organization has simultaneously begun investigating external acquisitions to add right-handed power, specifically targeting consistent production during Stanton’s recovery. Should surgical intervention become necessary, the Yankees might pursue a midseason trade to strengthen their offensive output.

Stanton’s injury chronicle: Career defined by disruptions

Since finalizing his 13-year, $325 million contract with the Miami Marlins before the 2015 season, Stanton has ranked among baseball’s most intimidating power threats—when available. However, his consistent presence in the lineup has proven problematic.

His injury history includes numerous significant setbacks:

  • 2011: Leg and eye injuries disrupted his performance consistency.
  • 2012: Underwent knee surgery and missed substantial playing time.
  • 2013: Hamstring strain sidelined him for over a month.
  • 2014: Sustained multiple facial fractures after being struck by a pitch.
  • 2015: A wrist fracture caused him to miss most of the season.
  • 2016: Hamstring strain resulted in another extended absence.
  • 2019: Season devastated by biceps strain, knee injury, and shoulder complications, restricting him to 18 appearances.
  • 2020-2023: Encountered various muscle strains, including hamstring and Achilles issues, leading to significant missed time.
  • 2024: Maintained relative health, appearing in 125 games and connecting for 30 home runs, though he managed ongoing minor knee discomfort.
  • 2025: Currently rehabilitating tendon injuries affecting both elbows, receiving platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections while also managing a chronic calf condition.

Despite his injury struggles, Stanton’s impact when healthy remains unquestionable. His 2024 campaign represented a resurgence, producing 116 wRC+ and 27 home runs, confirming his importance within the Yankees’ offensive framework.

Long-term outlook and future considerations

Stanton’s health concerns extend beyond the current season. His physical decline has become increasingly evident, with his lower body struggling to withstand regular playing demands. Once capable of handling outfield responsibilities throughout a full season, he now finds himself limited to designated hitting duties, which still present considerable risk.

Should Stanton require season-ending surgery, the implications would affect not only the Yankees’ immediate plans but also raise significant concerns regarding his future contributions. With over $100 million remaining on his contract, the organization must carefully strategize how to manage his physical workload to prevent further deterioration.

Can the Yankees afford to wait?

As the Yankees navigate early-season roster challenges, Stanton’s health status remains a central concern. If he successfully returns by Memorial Day, the team would regain a crucial power element at a pivotal moment. However, if his condition deteriorates, the Yankees may need to proceed without him for the foreseeable future.

The front office faces careful deliberation, recognizing that Stanton’s extended absence could necessitate trade discussions sooner than anticipated.

For now, the Yankees’ offensive outlook depends significantly on Stanton’s recovery progress, but given his extensive injury history, uncertainty remains the predominant theme in his ongoing struggle to maintain a consistent field presence.
