Juan Soto’s free agency has emerged as the defining storyline of the 2024 offseason, as the 25-year-old superstar edges closer to securing what many expect will be a historic contract. On Tuesday, Scott Boras, Soto’s agent, provided an update that shed light on the next phase of negotiations.

Juan Soto’s free agency heating up: Scott Boras updates superstar’s status

Speaking with Newsweek Sports’ J.P. Hoornstra, Boras confirmed that Juan Soto has “begun the process of eliminating teams” from contention. While this signals progress, Boras emphasized that no signing is imminent. “We’re evaluating all the opportunities,” Boras said, underscoring that Soto’s team is not rushing to finalize a decision.

This development arrives just days before the Winter Meetings in Dallas, where several high-profile deals are often completed. Many insiders believe Juan Soto could follow the trend of marquee free agents like Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani, who inked their contracts within the first 10 days of December. However, Boras declined to provide a specific timeline for when Juan Soto might sign, leaving the possibility open for a longer process.

Although Boras did not reveal which teams have been eliminated, the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets, and Blue Jays have all been heavily linked to Juan Soto this offseason. Among these, the Dodgers are rumored to be particularly aggressive in their pursuit of the superstar outfielder, especially as they look to return to World Series contention following a disappointing 2024 postseason.

Juan Soto is widely expected to command a record-breaking contract that could exceed $600 million, with some speculating the figure might approach $700 million. Such a deal would set a new benchmark in Major League Baseball and reflect Juan Soto’s extraordinary abilities at the plate.

In 2024, Juan Soto delivered one of the best seasons of his career, slashing .288/.419/.569 with a career-high 41 home runs and 109 RBIs. His league-leading on-base percentage showcased his elite plate discipline, while his power numbers reaffirmed his standing as one of the game’s most dynamic hitters. These accomplishments earned him his fourth All-Star selection and a third-place finish in the American League MVP voting, trailing only his Yankees teammate Aaron Judge and Royals star Bobby Witt Jr.

Juan Soto’s decision is poised to reshape the competitive landscape of MLB. For teams like the Yankees and Dodgers, adding Soto could bolster already strong rosters with championship aspirations. Meanwhile, the Mets, Red Sox, and Blue Jays view Soto as a cornerstone capable of transforming their franchises.

As the Winter Meetings approach, the baseball world waits anxiously for further updates on Juan Soto’s free agency. With Boras at the helm of negotiations, one thing remains certain: the outcome will be nothing short of monumental.
