The New York Yankees find themselves in a dire situation. According to the latest information reported by SNY, the team still has no idea where Juan Soto will play next year.

“It’s no secret that the Yankees and Mets are ‘all in’ on Soto,” one league source told Andy Martino, adding that there’s a widespread belief among bidders that Toronto could come in with the highest offer.

The Yankees and Juan Soto’s uncertainty

However, skepticism remains about Juan Soto joining the Blue Jays. A source pushed back, stating that if a team is involved in the final bidding, Soto is willing to play there. This aligns with the belief that Juan Soto’s camp doesn’t need to artificially inflate his market by including teams that aren’t legitimately in the race.

Timing has been slightly easier to predict than Juan Soto’s ultimate choice. From the start, many believed the bidding process would pick up this week and resolve by or during the Winter Meetings next week. “That expectation remains,” wrote Andy Martino on SNY this Tuesday evening.

The past few days have seen a whirlwind of speculation surrounding Juan Soto. One insider claims the Yankees are likely to land the Dominican star, while others suggest names like the Red Sox or even teams outside the AL East are in contention. Not only are the Yankees and Mets serious contenders, but Toronto is also expected to make a strong offer.

While this isn’t entirely unexpected, the Yankees might be “playing with fire” by having no concrete sense of Soto’s plans.

The ball, the cards, and the guessing game

According to a league source closely involved in the discussions, “I don’t think anyone knows where Juan wants to play except for Juan, [agent Scott] Boras, and maybe Juan’s family.”

While it might appear that multiple parties are in control, only Juan Soto truly holds the cards. The Yankees might feel like they’re on steady ground, but it’s more of a tightrope act than they’d like to admit. Meanwhile, the Mets are left grasping at straws, hoping for a late-inning miracle. Both teams are in the same guessing game, hanging on every whisper and nudge from Soto’s camp.

The ambiguity has sparked mixed reactions among fans. An ill-conceived joke about Juan Soto potentially joining the Red Sox last season left some Yankees supporters annoyed, though others dismissed it as just business speculation. Many fans believe the chance of Soto going to Boston is slim.

Still, some believe the Yankees have a slight edge if offers from competing teams are close. This belief, drawn from a few well-informed sources, suggests Juan Soto might favor the Yankees—but no one is putting their money where their mouth is just yet. Meanwhile, the Mets have quietly stayed the course, banking on their stable leadership to tip the scales.

Ultimately, only Juan Soto and Boras truly know what factors will decide his future. For now, it’s a waiting game, with every move watched and scrutinized. As of Tuesday, a few days after Thanksgiving, the Soto sweepstakes seemed to have slowed, with no follow-up meetings scheduled during the extended holiday weekend.
