The Juan Soto sweepstakes is dominating the baseball world, and for good reason. The 26-year-old superstar outfielder is poised to sign one of the richest contracts in MLB history, with many expecting a deal to be finalized during December’s winter meetings.

Speculation about the value of Juan Soto’s contract has been rampant, with numbers ranging from $600 million to $700 million—and even higher in some projections. While the exact figure varies across reports, one thing is clear: Juan Soto will command a record-breaking deal that will almost certainly surpass initial expectations.

Per @RandyJMiller on Juan Soto (on @WFAN660):

🔺Yankees offer likely to top out around $550M.
🔺Believes Soto has 2-3 offers over $600M already / won’t take discount to stay w/ NYY.

The contenders in the Juan Soto race

The race for Soto’s services has narrowed to five powerhouse teams: the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, and New York Yankees. Each team offers unique advantages, but recent reports suggest the Yankees may be losing momentum in what’s shaping up to be one of the most competitive bidding wars in recent memory.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield forecasts Soto signing a 13-year, $611 million deal with the Mets. Schoenfield highlights the financial advantage of Mets owner Steve Cohen, who appears determined to land Soto. “If the Mets decide they must have Soto, it’s hard to imagine any team, including the Yankees, outbidding Cohen,” Schoenfield wrote. With the Mets’ payroll for 2024 currently sitting at $160 million—less than half of their total in 2023—they have plenty of room to make an extraordinary offer. Some insiders speculate Cohen could push the price closer to $700 million, ensuring no rival team can outbid him.

The Yankees’ uphill battle

The Yankees, who witnessed Juan Soto’s dominance in 2024—including a .988 OPS, 41 home runs, and multiple clutch performances—are eager to retain him. However, their financial commitment reportedly caps at $550 million, far below the figures being floated by other contenders. Yankees reporter Randy Miller recently stated on WFAN this Saturday, “I’d be surprised if Soto took any type of discount to return to the Yankees.” Miller further suggested the Yankees could finish as low as fourth in the sweepstakes, behind the Mets, Red Sox, and Dodgers.

The Boston Red Sox are making a bold push to land Juan Soto, with insiders suggesting the team is “willing to go the extra mile” to secure his services. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers—already bolstered by signing Shohei Ohtani to a $700 million deal and adding Blake Snell to their rotation—are equally determined. Adding Soto to their roster would cement the Dodgers as a juggernaut and perennial World Series favorites.

With so many differing price estimates released, ranging from $600 million to $700 million or even higher, the uncertainty surrounding Soto’s final contract figure only fuels the excitement. One thing is undeniable: Juan Soto will be more expensive than anyone initially predicted. As the winter meetings draw closer, baseball fans and analysts alike eagerly await the decision that will not only define the offseason but also reshape the league for years to come.
