The New York Yankees’ efforts to reinforce their bullpen at the 2024 trade deadline are facing scrutiny, particularly in light of the struggles that have followed. The team was after one of the top closers in the majors but backed down at the last minute as they didn’t wish to part way with George Lombard Jr., one of their top prospects.
While hindsight has fueled criticism, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees had actively sought additional bullpen upgrades, including pursuing Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott. Scott, who was ultimately traded to the San Diego Padres in a blockbuster deal, has been one of the top closers this season, boasting a 9-5 record, 1.44 ERA, and 20 saves in 22 opportunities. Since joining the Padres, Scott has maintained his effectiveness, posting a 2.25 ERA with two saves.
According to Heyman, the Marlins’ asking price for Scott included Yankees’ third-ranked prospect George Lombard Jr., a 19-year-old infielder and their first-round pick in 2023. Lombard Jr. is viewed as a key piece of the Yankees’ future, making the decision to retain him a challenging one.
The choice to hold onto Lombard Jr. rather than acquire an elite reliever like Scott has sparked debate, especially as the Yankees continue to navigate bullpen issues. This scenario underscores the difficult trade-offs teams must weigh between addressing immediate needs and preserving long-term potential, all while contending for a playoff spot.
General Manager Brian Cashman brought in relievers Enyel De Los Santos and Mark Leiter Jr., banking on the hope that Clay Holmes would reestablish himself as the team’s closer.
Unfortunately, the plan has not gone as envisioned. De Los Santos was designated for assignment by mid-August, and Leiter Jr. has struggled with a 5.79 ERA in limited appearances. Meanwhile, Holmes has been removed from his role as the primary closer, adding to the Yankees’ bullpen woes.

Who else besides GLJ did they want for Scott?
You have Soto, possibly only for this season. This was the season to pull out all the stops and go for it. I’ve always defended Cashman but this was a huge mistake.
