LOS ANGELES — Ten years ago, Jake Bauers, then with the Marina High School baseball team, played in the finals of California Interscholastic Division 1 at Dodger Stadium. He still has memories of how in his very first game at the ballpark in 2013, Jake Bauers only managed a couple of flyouts and walks against current Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty and ended up in a 1-0 defeat. On that day, he had tears streaming down his face as he stood along the first baseline once the game had concluded.

When Jake Bauers visited the ballpark in 2023, he seemed determined to better that experience of 2013. On Saturday, the right-handed hitter went on a home-run spree there to power the Yankees to a resounding win over the Dodgers.

Though Jake Bauers hails from Newport Beach and made a name during his school career at Huntington Beach, he never had a chance to make it to the major league in the Dodgers’ uniform. When he returned to the very place with the New York Yankees, the right-handed hitter showed the Dodgers what they missed.

A worthy performance by Jake Bauers

Amidst the presence of his loved ones, including his parents, wife, and in-laws, Jake Bauers achieved a remarkable milestone in his career during Saturday’s game at Dodger Stadium. He showcased his power by launching two awe-inspiring two-run home runs off Los Angeles starter Michael Grove. The first majestic hit occurred in the second inning, soaring a remarkable distance of 414 feet with a speed of 107.6 miles per hour.

The second home run traveled an impressive 409 feet from the moment it left Jake Bauers’ bat, clocking an impressive 109.2 mph.

Jake Bauers credits Yankees for his turnaround

Rescued by the Yankees after spending two seasons outside of the major leagues, Jake Bauers has experienced a remarkable resurgence in both his batting prowess and his professional trajectory. With the guidance of the hitting coaches at Triple-A Scranton and the Bronx, Jake Bauers has successfully rekindled his swing and revitalized his career. As reported by Conor Foley of the Scranton Times-Tribune, Jake Bauers has impressively launched 14 home runs in a combined total of 47 games this season, with five of those homers contributing to the Yankees’ success.

During Saturday’s game, Jake Bauers’ impressive pair of hits to right field played a pivotal role in propelling the Yankees to a 6-3 triumph, thereby leveling the series.

Jake Bauers explained that following the game. He found it rather ironic that his success came from not intentionally attempting to hit for power. Instead, his focus was simply on making solid contact with the ball, aiming to connect the barrel with the pitch, and trusting that positive outcomes would naturally follow.

Jake Bauers hit two home runs against the Dodgers helping the Yankees win 6-3 on June 6, 2023, in Los Angeles.

Commencing the season at the Triple-A level, the 27-year-old exhibited his power-hitting prowess by smacking an impressive total of nine home runs in just 21 games. Having amassed 328 games of major league experience with Tampa Bay, Cleveland, and Seattle in previous seasons, Jake Bauers finally made his debut for the Yankees on April 29 of this year. It’s worth noting that he had spent the entirety of 2022 playing in the minor leagues with both New York and Cincinnati.

Although Saturday’s game showcased Jake Bauers’ inaugural multi-homer performance in the major leagues, he had already accomplished the remarkable feat of recording three multi-homer games during his time with the RailRiders this season. Surprisingly, Jake Bauers had never before achieved this accomplishment during his tenure in the minor leagues.

Aaron Boone commented on Jake Bauers’ performance, acknowledging that he had made a significant impact after his stint in Triple-A. Boone highlighted his impressive contributions, particularly his two pivotal home runs, emphasizing his ability to deliver in crucial moments. Additionally, Boone praised Jake Bauers for his considerable power, recognizing his capability to generate significant impact at the plate.

Reflecting on the unique journey that each player takes, Boone expressed his admiration for Jake Bauers’ performance, acknowledging the valuable contributions he has made to the team.

Although Jake Bauers’ batting average stands at .237 across 26 games, his overall offensive performance is highlighted by an impressive .889 OPS. Notably, he has showcased his productivity in recent outings, going 6-for-13 (.462) with two doubles, three home runs, and seven runs batted in (RBI) over his last five appearances. His MLB debut for the Yankees once came under the shadow of injury too.

Bauers flourishes in pinstripes

In June 2022, the Yankees acquired Jake Bauers from the Cleveland Guardians by exchanging cash, and since then, they have invested efforts in revamping his swing. As they strive to secure a regular left fielder, the Yankees are now reaping the benefits of their work on Bauers, seeing promising results unfold.

Jake Bauers hit two home runs against the Dodgers helping the Yankees win 6-3 on June 3, 2023, in Los Angeles.

According to Jake Bauers, the driving force behind his recent accomplishments can be attributed to the adjustments made to his swing by the Yankees‘ hitting coaches at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Following a disappointing .135 batting average with the Reds’ Triple-A team in the previous season, the coaches made various alterations to his technique. However, the crucial modification that has truly made a difference is the development of a flatter bat path as Jake Bauers swings through the hitting zone.

The solution provided Jake Bauers with a distinct opportunity to break free from thoughts of retiring early, albeit he didn’t begin to witness outcomes until the culmination of this year’s spring training.

Jake Bauers mentioned that since he had been traded there the previous year, there had been a consistent upward trend in terms of his feelings at the plate. He credited the Yankees, their hitting philosophy, and the coaches there for his progress.

The player also explained that he had felt like he had nothing to lose at the time. Jake Bauers mentioned that he had been hitting a buck-thirty in Triple-A and had started to believe that his career might be nearing its end. He expressed uncertainty about ever returning to the major leagues. Therefore, when he was traded and informed about their approach, Jake Bauers immediately agreed to do whatever they asked of him. He attributed all the credit to them.

The Yankees are eager to witness Bauers maintain this level of performance, as they are in need of a dependable left-handed hitter for the left-field position.

Undoubtedly, there exists a significant opportunity for Jake Bauers. However, he holds the belief that every day presents an opportunity in itself. The player emphasized that he couldn’t stress it enough. He expressed immense gratitude for being there and being included in the lineup every day. He conveyed his thankfulness for the opportunity to step on the field daily. He mentioned that as long as they continued to allow him in, he would give his utmost effort and dedication.

In addition to Jake Bauers, another California native from Linden, Aaron Judge, impressed at Dodger Stadium on Saturday with a solo home run in the sixth inning and a magnificent catch in the eighth.
