The New York Yankees find themselves immersed in the pursuit of superstar outfielder Juan Soto this offseason, leaving little attention for other pending free agents. Among those whose futures hang in the balance is second baseman Gleyber Torres, who, despite a solid 2024 campaign, has been overshadowed by the Soto sweepstakes.

Could Gleyber Torres be the Giants’ key to toppling Dodgers in 2025?

According to Newsweek, Gleyber Torres is projected to command a three-year, $20 million contract this winter—a surprisingly modest figure for a player of his caliber. While the Yankees remain focused on reshaping their roster, including exploring potential replacements for Torres, speculation about his departure has begun to gain traction.

One prominent projection comes from Nick Villano of FanSided, who predicts Gleyber Torres will leave the Bronx and land with the San Francisco Giants. Villano envisions Torres as part of the Giants’ broader strategy to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres in the fiercely competitive National League West.

“The Giants are looking to make moves this offseason, and Torres will be one of them,” Villano wrote. “They have a need at second base, and they could sorely use more offensive help in that division. Torres might not be their biggest move, but it’s one that gets them closer to contention.”

The move would make sense for San Francisco, a team seeking stability at second base and additional offensive firepower. Torres, with his combination of power and consistency, could be a key piece for the Giants as they aim to close the gap in a division dominated by perennial contenders.

From the Yankees’ perspective, however, letting Gleyber Torres walk might not come so easily. While their attention is currently fixed on Soto, the team’s front office likely recognizes the value Torres brings to their infield. At just 27 years old, he’s a proven contributor and still in his prime. Given the relatively low price tag projected by Spotrac, some analysts, including the article’s author, argue Torres might command closer to $15 million annually on the open market.

If the Giants are willing to offer a more lucrative deal, the Yankees could face tough competition to retain their infielder. However, the Yankees’ recent interest in reshuffling their infield—potentially moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base or signing a new third baseman—hints that they may be prepared to pivot away from Torres altogether.

As the offseason progresses, Gleyber Torres’ future remains one of the more intriguing subplots. While the Yankees focus on the Soto sweepstakes, teams like the Giants could seize the opportunity to lure Torres away, potentially giving the Bay Area franchise a significant boost in its quest to challenge the Dodgers and Padres in 2025. Whether Torres stays in pinstripes or heads west, his next move will undoubtedly be one to watch.
