NEW YORK — The pitch timer read nine seconds when Yankees’ Jose Caballero lifted his eyes toward the mound. By the letter of the rule, he had a second to spare.
He had done it that way for months. His manager had cleared the cadence with the league office. The umpires had watched it and let it go.
This time an automatic strike appeared on the scoreboard.
What followed was not a routine argument over a judgment call. It was a claim that baseball had written something just for theYankees star.
Aaron Boone and Caballero accused Major League Baseball of applying a standard to the Yankees shortstop that no other hitter faces, and of enforcing it without telling the club, after a sixth-inning violation Wednesday in a 5-3, 10-inning loss to the Pirates at Yankee Stadium. The officials on the field largely confirmed the premise.
The moment that set it off
Batting with two outs and a runner on first in the sixth, Pittsburgh ahead 2-0, Caballero took a first-pitch strike from reliever Carmen Mlodzinski, then went through his usual approach, looking down as he settled in.
Plate umpire Quinn Wolcott awarded an automatic strike. Replays showed theYankees star engaged with the pitcher at nine seconds, one tick inside the eight-second requirement.
Caballero turned to Wolcott and pressed him on what had changed. The umpire’s answer, picked up on the broadcast microphones, described a limit that appears nowhere in the rulebook.
“You don’t get to do the three or four seconds thing in the box anymore,” Wolcott told the Yankees infielder.
Caballero repeated a single accusation, loud enough for the microphones to catch it.
“You’re picking on me,” the Yankees star said.
Boone and third-base coach Luis Rojas came out to separate them. Hitting coach James Rowson was ejected for yelling toward crew chief Adrian Johnson. When play resumed, Caballero struck out to end the inning, finishing 0-for-4.
What the umpires said afterward
The pool report is where the story turned. Rather than describing a routine enforcement, Johnson said the league had issued a specific directive about one player.
“He’s been warned all season. We were instructed not to warn him. We were instructed to violate him,” Johnson said. “That’s what it is. It’s a violation.”
Johnson traced the decision to Monday night, when Pirates reliever Dennis Santana charged toward Yankees’ Caballero over the same tactic and both benches emptied. Santana was the aggressor, and Caballero broke no rule on the play.
“It’s not allowed anymore. It was the cause of a benches-clearing situation,” Johnson added. “Major League Baseball stepped in. They want it enforced.”
Wolcott explained the standard in terms that singled out one hitter by name.
“There’s no other hitter that gets in the box and takes the amount of time that Caballero does while looking down and not making eye contact with the pitcher,” Wolcott said. “Obviously, it’s caused a lot of problems in the past. It’s not going to be allowed anymore.”
Boone says the guidance reversed overnight
The Yankees had not been guessing. After a June warning in Toronto, where crew chief John Tumpane flagged Caballero for intentional delay but issued no strike, Boone sought clarification from the league.
Boone said the instruction he received then was precise, and that Caballero had been following it exactly.
“I’ve been told very specifically over and over when we have had issues, when I’ve had my conversations with the league, he has to be alert at eight seconds. That’s making sure Cabby looks up at nine, just make sure he’s in. That’s very specifically what I’ve been told,” theYankees manager said. “And today was something different. And they didn’t give us the heads up.”
A call between the league office and the umpiring crew took place before the doubleheader. The Yankees were not on it, and the umpires said they did not know whether anyone had told the club.
Asked how frustrating that was, Boone reached for a word he rarely uses about the league.
“I’m going to plead the fifth here,” theYankees skipper added. “MLB came out with something new today, so we have to change again. … Very frustrating. It’s embarrassing.”
Caballero’s case for selective enforcement
MLB has pointed to a provision in its Pace of Game Procedures stating that conduct designed to deceive a pitcher into starting his delivery counts as circumvention. The Yankees note that pitchers are free to work the timer to zero, and Caballero rejects the premise that he is deceiving anyone.
The Yankees utility star argued that consistency is his defense.
“I’m not trying to trick anyone. I do the same thing over and over, you can check my last 100, 150 at-bats,” Caballero said. “If you’re going to make a change in the rule, at least notify us before the game, not during the game.”
Then came the accusation at the center of the dispute, that others do more and hear nothing.
“I’ve seen other guys do other things and they don’t call anything on them. I can name players I’ve seen deceiving the pitchers, but they don’t call it on them,” Caballero said. “They just call it on me. Like I said, they’re just picking on me.”
The Yankees star framed the standard he had been held to as different from everyone else’s, and closed with a shot at the league’s own invention.
“For everyone it’s eight seconds. For me it was nine,” Caballero said. “They’re the ones who invented this clock thing. They don’t know what to do with their rule now.”
Where it leaves the Yankees
Caballero sat out the nightcap, replaced by Anthony Volpe, and said he will have to rebuild the way he settles into the box. The umpires took no issue with his three other plate appearances.
The timer caused a second dispute that afternoon. Gerrit Cole was called for a balk after the clock shut off at seven seconds, startling him into breaking his hands. He conceded the call was correct while noting no umpire saw the malfunction.
The Yankees split the doubleheader and took the series, sitting 2.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East. They open a three-game set in Philadelphia on Friday.
MLB has not publicly answered the allegation that it created a standard for one player. Until it does, the Yankees are left adjusting to a rule they say nobody explained to them.
