New York Yankees 4-2 Kansas City Royals
Rookie sensation Jasson Domínguez delivered when it mattered most, smacking a go-ahead three-run double while Max Fried continued his early-season brilliance as the New York Yankees overcame an early deficit to defeat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Tuesday night. The comeback victory at Yankee Stadium puts the Bronx Bombers in position for a series sweep in this rematch of last October’s American League Division Series showdown.
Fried Provides Stability Amid Rotation Concerns
With the Yankees’ pitching staff hampered by injuries, Max Fried (3-0) once again proved his worth as a stabilizing force. The left-hander worked 6 2/3 efficient innings, fanning seven Royals batters while surrendering just two runs. His command was impeccable as he mixed velocities and locations to cool Kansas City’s bats after their early success.
Fried’s performance couldn’t have come at a better time for New York, which continues to navigate through a rotation missing ace Gerrit Cole and promising youngster Luis Gil. His ability to work deep into games has been a godsend for a pitching staff searching for consistency.
Royals Jump Ahead But Can’t Maintain Momentum
Kansas City wasted no time putting pressure on the home team, breaking through in the third inning when MJ Melendez launched a solo shot to put the Royals on the board. Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a scorching RBI double that crashed off the right-center field wall, giving the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
Those early fireworks proved to be the entirety of Kansas City’s offensive output. The struggling Royals, now a disappointing 2-6 away from Kauffman Stadium, have dropped four of their previous five contests as their historical difficulties against the Yankees continued unabated.
Sixth-Inning Rally Shifts Momentum to Yankees
Michael Wacha (0-3) appeared to be cruising until his command abandoned him in the pivotal sixth inning. With two outs, Wacha uncharacteristically issued three consecutive walks to load the bases, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe displaying impressive plate discipline to draw the final two free passes.
Royals manager brought in southpaw Angel Zerpa to escape the jam, but communication issues immediately plagued the reliever, who struggled to hear instructions through his PitchCom device. The technological troubles led to four straight balls to Austin Wells, forcing in New York’s first run.
Then came Domínguez’s moment of brilliance. The switch-hitter, who had already collected two singles from the left side earlier in the game, stepped in right-handed and lashed a 1-2 fastball down the left-field line, clearing the bases and providing the Yankees a 4-2 lead. The dramatic swing was punctuated by Domínguez’s helmet flying off, symbolizing the sudden shift in the game’s trajectory.
Bullpen Excellence Secures Victory
Luke Weaver entered the fray when Fried departed in the seventh, tasked with navigating a tense situation with two Royals on base. Weaver calmly retired Maikel Garcia to extinguish the threat, then continued his flawless work by setting down all four batters he faced with precision and poise.
Closer Devin Williams slammed the door with authority in the ninth, recording his third save with a perfect inning that secured another nail-biting victory for the Pinstripers.
Grisham’s Defensive Gem Preserves Lead
The seventh inning might have unfolded differently if not for defensive replacement Trent Grisham‘s excellence. The glove-first outfielder tracked down a deep drive in center field, making a spectacular running catch that helped maintain the Yankees’ fragile advantage. The defensive highlight further validated the manager’s decision to insert Grisham for late-game situations.
Tuesday’s outcome reinforced a troubling pattern for Kansas City, which has now dropped 19 of their last 20 completed series against New York dating back to May 2015, including postseason matchups. Even in closely contested battles, the Royals consistently struggle to finish against a Yankees squad that thrives in pressure-packed situations.

Yankees vs. Royals – Series Finale
- Yankees Starter: Clarke Schmidt (2025 debut)
- Royals Starter: Kris Bubic (2-1, 0.96 ERA)
- First Pitch: 7:05 p.m. ET
- Venue: Yankee Stadium
The Yankees aim to complete the three-game sweep behind Schmidt’s anticipated return, while Kansas City hopes to salvage the final contest behind Bubic, one of their few bright spots in the early season.
Schmidt is scheduled to make his first appearance of the 2025 campaign for the Yankees in Wednesday night’s series finale. After battling rotator cuff tendinitis during spring training, Schmidt is ready to build on his impressive 2024 performance, where he posted a 5-5 record with a stellar 2.85 ERA across 16 starts. His return represents a significant boost for a rotation desperately seeking reinforcements.
