Yankees’ Dominguez winced in pain at second base after his clutch three-run double, raising the possibility of injury from his bat smacking the back of his helmet. But Boone claimed it’s contact lens issues, not injury.
Jasson Dominguez delivered the decisive blow Tuesday evening, propelling the New York Yankees to a thrilling 4-2 victory over Kansas City. With the Bronx Bombers trailing by a run in the sixth and every base occupied, the 22-year-old outfielder connected with a 1-2 fastball, driving it hard down the left-field line. His bases-clearing double instantly transformed the contest’s complexion, giving New York a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The moment exemplified precisely why Yankees management entrusted Domínguez with the starting left field position heading into the 2025 campaign.
The jubilation quickly gave way to concern, however.
During his powerful follow-through, Domínguez’s bat collided with his helmet, forcing it awkwardly over his eyes. What spectators couldn’t immediately detect was that this collision also dislodged both of his contact lenses. After reaching second base, the Yankees’ top rookie was visibly uncomfortable, squinting noticeably as he returned to the dugout.
When the Yankees took the field the following inning, Cody Bellinger had shifted from center to left field, with Trent Grisham patrolling center. This unexpected defensive adjustment immediately triggered injury speculation among fans and media alike.
Yankees manager clears air on Dominguez injury
Yankees skipper Aaron Boone quickly dispelled injury concerns postgame.
Boone emphasized that no physical injury had occurred and that the substitution was merely precautionary after Domínguez’s contact lens mishap during his swing.
The Yankees star himself later explained the unusual incident to reporters: “I don’t know—I think when the helmet was in my face I think that was when I lost it—I felt it when they popped out.”
Medical staff subsequently confirmed no issues beyond the temporary vision disruption, and Domínguez is slated to resume his regular role without limitations.
‘The Martian’ evolving

Known as “The Martian” for his exceptional five-tool abilities, Domínguez is beginning to fulfill his considerable promise. Since joining the Yankees organization in 2019, he’s gradually developed into a significant contributor during his first complete major league season. Tuesday’s three-hit showcase elevated his batting average to .275, further cementing his growing significance within a lineup striving to recapture championship form.
After failing to secure Juan Soto during the offseason—ultimately losing him to the crosstown Mets—Yankees management constructed an outfield featuring Aaron Judge, Bellinger, and Domínguez. While Judge and Bellinger provide veteran stability, Domínguez’s emergence has injected fresh vitality into the roster.
Defensive development continues

Despite his offensive contributions, Domínguez’s defensive capabilities remain under evaluation. Boone routinely replaces him during crucial defensive situations, preferring experienced outfielders like Grisham in late innings. Tuesday’s substitution, though initially concerning, actually aligned with this established pattern, simply accelerated by the vision complication.
Nevertheless, each productive at-bat enhances Domínguez’s standing with the coaching staff.
Yankees looking forward
Currently 10-7 and competing near the top of the AL East standings, the Yankees will finish their series against Kansas City before departing for a road trip. All indications suggest Domínguez will immediately return to the starting lineup, with the organization viewing Tuesday’s peculiar contact lens episode as merely an unusual, but ultimately inconsequential, footnote to an otherwise impressive performance.
