Nestor Cortes will be the starting pitcher for the Yankees on Opening Day, following Gerrit Cole’s absence. The New York Yankees suffered the loss of pitcher Gerrit Cole and will pin their hopes on Nestor Cortes for the MLB’s Opening Day. But is that the most important thing at this moment?

Yankees scramble for strong start as Nestor Cortes fills Cole’s void

The New York Yankees are working at any cost to have the best possible start. While left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes will be the opener on Opening Day with the Yankees, following Gerrit Cole’s absence, the team has had a low winning percentage in spring training. While the numbers aren’t alarming, there is much to improve upon for the start of the regular season for the Bronx Bombers.

For example, 29-year-old Nestor Cortes had a notable performance last season with an ERA of 4.97, a WHIP of 1.25, and 67 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings of work, in which he participated in 12 starts. Meanwhile, Gerrit Cole will be out of action for the next 10 to 12 weeks due to the elbow injury he suffered a few days ago.

Cole has remained one of the top pitchers in MLB, maintaining an ERA of 2.44 in 158 1/3 innings of work, including 28 starts; additionally, he finished eighth in the American League Cy Young voting last season.

Time to give the prospects a little bit of trust

MLB

However, things seem to be worse than expected, and unfortunately, they are. While players like Spencer Jobes are at their best wearing the Yankees jersey, others like Everson Pereira have been relegated to the minor leagues, such as the Minor Leagues.

This means that the high competition of the young players could be beneficial, but some aspects will need to improve in the next two weeks before the start of the season.

The possible absences of DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge at the start of the season do not worry Brian Cashman, who recently seems to be calmer than the fans. And perhaps that shows that aspects like effectiveness and certainty will not be ignored.

Statistical analysis is in full swing to make the Yankees better than last season when they missed the MLB playoffs. Perhaps that is the best way for things to improve. And the decision to replace a standout player like Gerrit Cole is in the hands of Nestor Cortes, perhaps the most difficult opportunity to prove for everyone who has already had it.
