Spring training is all about first impressions, and Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt wasted no time making theirs. In their first game wearing Yankees pinstripes, both sluggers recorded hits that set the tone for an eventual 4-0 win over the Rays.

Cody Bellinger, signed this offseason to add left-handed power to the lineup, showed off his bat-to-ball skills early. He dribbled a single through the infield in his first at-bat, setting up Goldschmidt for what would become a key moment in the game. With two strikes against him, the veteran first baseman ripped an RBI double off the left-field wall, plating both Jasson Domínguez and Bellinger to give the Yankees a quick 2-0 lead.

Goldschmidt, acquired to provide a steady presence at first base and a potent bat in the middle of the order, proved why the Yankees targeted him in the offseason. His ability to drive in runs in clutch situations could be a game-changer as New York looks to solidify its offensive identity heading into the regular season. Later in the game, Bellinger added to the Yankees’ lead with a solo home run to deep right field, putting an exclamation mark on his strong debut.

A glimpse at the Yankees’ new lineup structure

The absence of Aaron Judge, who is pacing himself early in camp, gave the Yankees an opportunity to experiment with a new-look top of the order. Domínguez, viewed as a potential long-term leadoff hitter due to his speed and disciplined approach, set the table by drawing a walk. Bellinger, batting second, followed with his single before Goldschmidt capitalized with his two-run double.

While Judge’s return will inevitably reshape the batting order, the Yankees’ early lineup decisions suggest a strong desire to mix speed, contact, and power. Bellinger’s presence as a high-contact hitter capable of hitting for power could serve as a crucial bridge between Domínguez and the heart of the lineup, while Goldschmidt’s experience and discipline provide balance.

Though most of the focus was on his offense, Bellinger’s defensive versatility remains one of his most valuable assets. Expected to see time in both center field and first base, his ability to contribute in multiple roles will give manager Aaron Boone much-needed flexibility. Even as the Yankees weigh how best to structure their outfield, Bellinger’s steady glove offers insurance at multiple positions.

Goldschmidt’s ability to produce early in camp is particularly notable given the Yankees’ emphasis on veteran leadership. With a roster that now includes a blend of star power and young talent, Goldschmidt’s approach at the plate and presence in the clubhouse could be as influential as his on-field production. His impact isn’t just about RBIs—it’s about setting a standard of preparation and execution for the entire team.

What’s next

The Yankees’ spring schedule continues with a matchup against the Blue Jays in Dunedin, with Carlos Rodón making his spring debut. The game is scheduled for 1:07 PM ET and will be broadcast on Sportsnet. As the team continues to refine its roster and batting order, all eyes will remain on how newcomers like Bellinger and Goldschmidt integrate into the club’s plans. If opening day was any indication, the Yankees’ offseason acquisitions are already proving their worth.
