With Opening Day scheduled for March 27, 2025, the New York Yankees have reportedly joined approximately eight other MLB teams showing interest in San Diego Padres’ standout pitcher Dylan Cease. The Yankees’ pursuit comes at a critical time as their rotation faces significant setbacks due to injuries to key starters.
According to Pat Ragazzo of SI, the New York Yankees are among the teams that the San Diego Padres are looking for a possible swap.
“We’re just 12 days from Opening Day, but there is still some trade buzz surrounding Dylan Cease’s name given injuries to top aces such as Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees,” he claimed. “Among the teams the Padres have been scouting due to Cease interest include: the Mets, Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and a team that has yet to be revealed in the Philadelphia Phillies, per league sources.”
Yankees’ injury woes call for reinforcement
The Yankees‘ pitching staff has been dealt several devastating blows in recent weeks. Gerrit Cole, the team’s undisputed ace, underwent Tommy John surgery on March 11, 2025, effectively ending his 2025 campaign before it began.
Luis Gil, expected to play a substantial role in the rotation, is currently rehabilitating from a right lat strain that will keep him sidelined until at least June.
Dylan Cease: A potential solution

At 29 years old, Dylan Cease has established himself as a dependable frontline starter since joining the Padres via trade from the Chicago White Sox in early 2024. His performance last season was particularly impressive, as he accumulated a 3.47 ERA across 189.1 innings while amassing 224 strikeouts.
Cease’s combination of consistency, durability, and strikeout ability makes him an ideal candidate for teams looking to strengthen their starting rotations. Adding intrigue to the situation is Cease’s contract status—he’s set to become a free agent following the 2025 season, creating additional motivation for the Padres to explore trade possibilities rather than potentially losing him without compensation.
Trade speculations and challenges
San Diego’s willingness to field offers for their prized right-hander reportedly stems from organizational needs to enhance their offensive production. Recent reports suggest the Padres are actively seeking significant offensive upgrades and view Cease as their most valuable trade chip to accomplish this goal.
From the Yankees’ perspective, acquiring a pitcher of Cease’s caliber would necessitate a substantial return package. This would likely include premium prospects or established major-league talent. Recent scouting activities suggest the Padres have been thoroughly evaluating the Yankees’ farm system and major league roster to identify potential trade components.
Cease is not ruling out a trade
When reporters recently questioned Cease about swirling trade rumors, the pitcher offered a characteristically brief response: “Anything can happen.” This understated acknowledgment reflects the unpredictable nature of baseball’s trade market, particularly during the final weeks before a new season begins.
Yankees’ strategic considerations

The Yankees’ interest in Cease aligns perfectly with their immediate need to shore up a rotation compromised by injuries. However, the organization faces complex decisions regarding the appropriate cost of prospects and talent. The front office must carefully weigh addressing immediate competitive concerns against potentially compromising their long-term development pipeline.
New York must also consider how Cease would integrate into their rotation beyond 2025 when he becomes eligible for free agency. Any significant prospect package would presumably come with expectations of negotiating a contract extension.
The road ahead
As the 2025 campaign approaches, the Yankees face critical roster decisions that will impact their competitiveness in the fiercely contested AL East. Acquiring Dylan Cease could provide the stability and front-line production needed to compensate for Cole’s absence, but finalizing such a trade would require satisfying San Diego’s considerable asking price.
The coming weeks will prove decisive in determining whether Cease joins the Yankees’ storied franchise or continues his tenure with the Padres. With nine teams reportedly in the mix, the Yankees will need to present a compelling offer to stand out from other suitors.
As both organizations evaluate their options, baseball observers will be watching closely to see if this potential blockbuster trade materializes before Opening Day arrives.
