The offseason speculation surrounding the New York Yankees’ potential acquisition of Dylan Cease has taken a surprising turn with news of the pitcher’s trade to the San Diego Padres. Amidst significant roster adjustments, the Padres, who underwent a substantial payroll reduction following a disappointing season, have emerged as proactive contenders in the trade market.
Padres acquire Dylan Cease
Reports indicate that the Padres secured Dylan Cease’s services as they embarked on a journey from Phoenix to Seoul, South Korea, for a forthcoming series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. While the deal is pending finalization pending physical examinations, Cease has been informed of the trade. In return, the Chicago White Sox are set to receive two promising pitching prospects from the Padres’ roster: Drew Thorpe, ranked fifth, and Jairo Iriarte, ranked eighth. Notably, Thorpe is highly regarded for his pitching prowess, particularly his exceptional changeup.
Dylan Cease’s departure from the White Sox marks a significant move for both teams. The Padres, having shed considerable payroll through trades and free agency departures, are poised to bolster their starting rotation with Cease alongside stalwarts Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove. This acquisition underscores the Padres’ commitment to remaining competitive despite recent roster adjustments.
Dylan Cease opportunity lost: Yankees forced to regroup after Padres deal
Meanwhile, the Yankees, who had expressed keen interest in acquiring Dylan Cease, find themselves at a crossroads. With ace Gerrit Cole facing potential injury concerns, the need for additional pitching depth becomes even more pronounced. Despite their efforts to negotiate with the White Sox throughout the offseason, the Yankees were unable to meet the asking price, which reportedly included top outfield prospect Spencer Jones.
The Yankees now face the challenge of exploring alternative options to reinforce their pitching staff in light of missing out on Dylan Cease. One potential avenue could be pursuing free agent pitcher Mike Clevinger, who boasts previous experience with the White Sox. However, with notable pitchers such as Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery still available in the free-agent market, the Yankees must carefully evaluate their options to address their pitching needs effectively.
As the offseason progresses, attention remains focused on the remaining free-agent pitchers, with Snell and Montgomery standing out as the top prospects available. For the Yankees, navigating the intricacies of the market becomes imperative as they seek to fortify their roster ahead of the upcoming season.

What absolutely stuns me is that not one of the the writers on any Yankees fan sites, or Yankee best reporters have even made a snide comment about what was demanded/must haves from the Yankees, and what they ended up getting. Will anyone dare to say something, considering they all reported still no Spencer Jones.
Sign Bauer. Give him a chance and he said he will take the minimum salary. If it works out you will look like a genius if not its only 1 season.
