CHICAGO — The Yankees missing much of its lineup cannot afford to give anything away. But they gave away plenty helping Chicago steal an 11-inning victory.

The mistakes came on the bases, in the batter’s box and in the small moments that decide one-run games. They added up to a defeat that felt self-inflicted long before the final pitch.

At the center of it was a young outfielder whose talent is not in question, but whose judgment increasingly is. With more responsibility on his shoulders, one flash of carelessness turned a gift into a groan across the Yankees dugout.

A triple erased in an instant

The play that will define the loss belonged to Jasson Dominguez. In the sixth inning of a scoreless game, the 23-year-old drove a leadoff shot down the right-field line against White Sox starter Sean Burke, the hardest-hit ball New York managed all day.

His speed did the hard part. Dominguez cruised into third well ahead of the throw, a leadoff triple in a game starved for offense. Then it unraveled. He began his headfirst slide too late and carried himself completely past the bag, and Chicago tagged him before he could get back.

Instead of a runner on third with nobody out, the Yankees had one out and empty bases. In a scoreless game, the swing was enormous. Burke escaped the inning and finished six shutout frames with 10 strikeouts.

The final was White Sox 2, Yankees 1 in 11 innings at Rate Field, a walk-off that dropped New York to 61-48 and completed a four-game split. It was the second straight extra-inning loss and left the Yankees 1-8 in extra-inning games this season.

One blunder, but not the only one

The slide was the most visible mistake. It was not the only one, and that is the part that should worry the club.

An inning later, Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to open the seventh, then wandered too far off first and was picked off by reliever Sean Newcomb. Another leadoff runner in a scoreless game, erased. The Yankees kept handing outs back.

The situational hitting was worse. New York went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position through nine innings and finished 1-for-15, stranding 11 runners. The first two hitters reached in the opening inning on catcher’s interference and a walk, and neither scored.

Dominguez had chances to make up for the slide. He struck out with two runners aboard in the eighth, then flied out with two more on after New York finally took a 10th-inning lead. The night kept slipping through the Yankees’ fingers.

Manager Aaron Boone did not dress it up afterward. His frustration was aimed at the offense, not the pitching that keeps carrying the club.

“We have to score a freaking point,” Boone said.

Why the mistakes cut deeper right now

Jazz Chisholm was caught in the basepath during the Yankees' 2-1 extra-inning loss to the White Sox, Chicago, July 30, 2026.

The context is what turns a baserunning gaffe into a real concern. The Yankees are without Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton, three of their primary run producers. That absence has pushed Dominguez into a bigger everyday role and a larger share of the responsibility.

He has the tools for the moment. The switch-hitting outfielder, nicknamed The Martian, has been a fixture in the lineup and has the athleticism to create extra bases. The same speed that produced the apparent triple is what makes the overslide sting. The ability is there. The execution lagged.

That gap defines the current Yankees. With the injured stars possibly out until September, run prevention has kept them afloat, but the margin is razor thin. Every wasted baserunner and every missed read carries outsized weight.

Goldschmidt, who endured his own rough day at the plate, pointed to the disconnect between the pitching and the offense. He made clear the hitters knew they let a strong effort go to waste.

“We couldn’t get anything going, and it’s unfortunate, because the pitchers really threw the ball well today,” Goldschmidt said.

A gem wasted and a lesson left unlearned

The pitching deserved far better. Ryan Weathers gave the Yankees seven scoreless innings on 106 pitches, allowing three hits and three walks with four strikeouts and 11 ground-ball outs. It was exactly what a taxed staff needed a day after a 12-inning loss.

New York’s lone lead lasted minutes. Trent Grisham‘s RBI single in the 10th brought home the first run, but Angel Chivilli bounced a wild pitch that moved the automatic runner to third, and former Yankee Andrew Benintendi tied it with a grounder up the middle that a normally positioned infield might have turned into an out.

Fernando Cruz could not finish the escape in the 11th. He loaded the bases, struck out one hitter after falling behind 3-0, then missed the zone on four straight pitches to Tristan Peters, forcing in the winning run without Chicago swinging.

The result was a game the Yankees lost without an official error, undone by baserunning, situational hitting and late execution. Dominguez’s lost triple will stand as the defining image, but the club produced enough avoidable mistakes around it to turn one blunder into another preventable defeat.

New York heads to the North Side for a three-game series against the Cubs on Friday, chasing the Rays in the AL East with the deadline days away. The talent that flashed on that sixth-inning drive is real. For the Yankees, so is the need to stop giving games away.
