How the Yankees’ Corbin Burnes talks could shift the Juan Soto sweepstakes

As the offseason heats up, the Yankees remain active in the market, balancing their pursuit of an elite starter with their ongoing efforts to secure Juan Soto. According to New York Post columnist Jon Heyman, the Yankees recently held Zoom meetings with top-tier pitchers, including Corbin Burnes, while monitoring Soto’s free agency decision.

Burnes, the 2021 Cy Young Award winner, delivered a stellar 2.92 ERA over 32 starts with the Orioles last season, striking out 181 batters across 191 1/3 innings. The Yankees’ front office, including general manager Brian Cashman and pitching coach Matt Blake, met with Burnes last month as part of their strategy to potentially upgrade a rotation that already features Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Marcus Stroman.

Juan Soto remains the offseason’s marquee free agent, with a decision expected before the Winter Meetings conclude next Wednesday in Dallas. Industry insiders suggest that Soto’s contract could surpass $600 million, making it unlikely the Yankees would add a high-cost pitcher if they retain the All-Star outfielder. However, should Soto sign elsewhere, Burnes or another top pitcher could become a priority.

While financial flexibility is limited—Cole and Rodon alone account for over $60 million in payroll next season—the Yankees are exploring all options to solidify their roster for 2025. With the Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox, and Blue Jays also vying for Soto, the Yankees’ offseason strategy will likely hinge on his decision.
