Gio Urshela sits out Yankees matchup in Sacramento — here’s why.

Friday night’s matchup between the Athletics and Yankees featured a conspicuous absence that didn’t escape the notice of observant baseball followers. Gio Urshela, the beloved former New York Yankees third baseman who served during the 2019-2021 seasons, remained conspicuously sidelined, marking his fourth straight game watching from the dugout.

The veteran infielder’s exclusion seemed particularly notable against his former organization, prompting questions from fans accustomed to seeing him patrol the hot corner. However, the benching reflected logical roster considerations — encompassing persistent health issues, evolving team dynamics, and the emergence of another ex-Yankee who’s seized the opportunity at third base.

Back issues and bench time for Urshela?

Ongoing back troubles have plagued Urshela throughout the campaign, creating sporadic lineup absences despite avoiding an injured list designation. These physical limitations have significantly affected the 32-year-old’s consistency and availability, particularly challenging given Oakland’s recent roster adjustments stemming from organizational promotions.

Despite maintaining solid defensive capabilities at third, Urshela’s offensive production has suffered dramatically. His current.621 OPS represents a substantial decline from the .789 mark achieved during his Yankees heyday. Combined with persistent physical discomfort, this diminished production has created opportunities for teammates to advance past him organizationally.

The Andujar effect

The primary catalyst behind Urshela’s recent benchings? Another former Bronx Bomber.

Miguel Andujar, predominantly an outfielder during his previous two Oakland seasons, received an unexpected assignment returning to third base following cascading roster changes initiated by elite prospect Nick Kurtz’s promotion. Kurtz’s arrival necessitated multiple positional shifts — particularly moving Tyler Soderstrom from first base outward.

This organizational reshuffling required third base coverage, and with Andujar displaying exceptional offensive form, the coaching staff designated him for the position. He’s subsequently started three consecutive games there, establishing himself as the current preference.

Andújar’s .786 OPS significantly exceeds Urshela’s production by more than 150 points, creating compelling justification for maintaining the current alignment despite Urshela’s defensive advantages.

The infield congestion threatens further intensification shortly. Zack Gelof, currently sidelined with wrist complications, approaches activation. Upon returning, Luis Urias — presently covering second base during Gelof’s absence — anticipates transitioning into third base considerations.

This impending development could additionally restrict Urshela’s chances. With Andujar performing, Urías offering versatility, and Gelof representing organizational future commitments, Urshela’s responsibilities might diminish toward utility reserve status, potentially becoming trade consideration material.

Many ex-Yankees among familiar faces

Urshela’s absence gained additional prominence considering Oakland’s current roster features five former Yankees organization members — ironically reversing 1950s circumstances when the Athletics were mockingly characterized as New York’s satellite operation due to consistently disadvantageous trades benefiting the Yankees.

Headlining this contingent stands Luis Severino, previously the Yankees’ cornerstone starter, currently anchoring Oakland’s rotation. Severino, having devoted eight initial professional seasons to pinstripes, anticipates starting Sunday’s series conclusion against his previous employer. Though his 1-3 record appears underwhelming superficially, a 3.62 ERA across eight starts reveals different effectiveness, completing six-plus innings in six appearances while remaining consistently reliable.

JP Sears, another Yankees alumnus arriving through the Frankie Montas transaction, demonstrates superior performance. Sporting a 2.93 ERA while consistently pitching deep, Sears represents Oakland’s most dependable rotation component presently.

Additionally, Mitch Spence, acquired from New York’s organization during the 2023 Rule 5 Draft, debuted last year and subsequently established a bullpen presence, undertaking various responsibilities, including critical situations following José Leclerc’s injury.

Combined with Andújar’s infield renaissance, the pattern becomes evident — though Yankees connections with former Athletics remain minimal, Oakland flourishes utilizing Bronx-developed talent.

Urshela’s pinstriped legacy

Yankees supporters maintain enduring appreciation for Urshela’s contributions. He provided stability during challenging injury-riddled campaigns spanning 2019-2021. His defensive competence alongside offensive reliability established a consistent presence, while crucial performances earned recognition within the notoriously demanding fanbase expectations.

His 2022 departure for Minnesota, within the transaction delivering Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to New York, concluded his Yankees involvement. Subsequently, organizational transitions have characterized his journey while attempting a rediscovery of elements establishing his Bronx popularity.

Currently, however, that resurgence remains suspended. Declining offensive metrics combined with recurring physical ailments diminish Urshela’s Oakland prominence. Future lineup inclusion versus bench designation depends upon health restoration, production improvement, and durability of the Athletics’ present infield arrangement.

Gio Urshela’s unavailability facing the Yankees represented circumstantial rather than dramatic developments. Oakland, capitalizing on Miguel Andújar’s offensive surge while anticipating Gelof’s return, established different priorities. Urshela’s immediate future involves determining seasonal responsibilities, potentially.

Health maintenance alongside rhythm rediscovery might generate opportunities, whether within Oakland or alternative destinations. Presently, however, as Yankees encounter familiar personnel wearing unfamiliar uniforms, Urshela’s previously vibrant rivalry participation enters a temporary hiatus.
