NEW YORK — The count read no balls and two strikes, and George Lombard Jr. had, by the umpire’s eye, already struck out twice over. Twice the young shortstop tapped his helmet to challenge. Twice the call was overturned. A strikeout became a walk.
It was the kind of moment that reveals a player. Most 21-year-olds, four games into a big league career, do not trust their own read of the strike zone against a future Hall of Famer. Lombard did, and he was right both times.
That plate appearance, in the fifth inning of Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Braves, helped swing a 5-4 Yankees win. But it was not the box score that had the Yankees talking afterward. It was the calm.
Something about this rookie feels older than his age. Yankees teammates have noticed. Coaches have noticed. Franchise legends have noticed. And it is becoming the real story of Lombard’s arrival in the Bronx.
A 21-year-old who already carries himself like a Yankee
Lombard was called up from Triple-A on Aug. 4 as the Yankees’ top prospect and a first-round pick from 2023. Four games in, the numbers are loud. He homered in his debut, added a second home run Saturday, and reached base repeatedly while showing advanced control of the strike zone.
The statistical marker is striking. Lombard became the first player in Yankees history with at least two home runs and three walks in his first four career games, per data circulated by researcher Katie Sharp. Through those four games he was hitting .385 with a home run, a triple, and multiple walks.
But the poise is what stands out. Yankees manager Aaron Boone called the two challenges Saturday one of the biggest moments of the game, a read most rookies would never trust. The maturity, more than the talent, is what keeps drawing comment.
Boone said the plate discipline is not a fluke, but a skill Lombard has shown for a while.
“I wouldn’t say surprised. We’re confident that he’s ready for this and he’s certainly showed that here through the first week,” Boone said. “But how about the two challenges. You could arguably say that was as big as anything in the game, setting us up to win the game. The one thing that he does and has done really well for awhile is he controls the zone and he’s strong and got power. He’s done outstanding.”
The bat and glove backing up the hype
The production has spanned both sides of the ball for the Yankees. On Saturday, Lombard saw 17 pitches in two plate appearances against Chris Sale, working a nine-pitch strikeout and an eight-pitch walk before later homering and singling. He does not give away at-bats.
His glove has been just as loud. In his second game, Lombard dove to his left to spear a 105.5 mph one-hopper off the bat of the Cardinals’ JJ Wetherholt, then rose and threw a strike to first. Yankees teammates were stunned.
Jazz Chisholm Jr., who played rehab games alongside Lombard in the minors last year, has seen the defense up close and did not hold back.
“Sick play,” Chisholm said of the diving stop, adding on Lombard’s overall defense: “I saw right away that his defense is just so spot on. Seriously, it’s amazing. He’s nasty out there.”
Third baseman Ryan McMahon, watching from a few feet away, kept circling back to the rookie’s footwork as the reason the highlight plays look routine.
“A young kid making plays like this is rare,” McMahon said. “His shortstop play is smooth, it’s comfortable, it’s athletic and his footwork is why you’re seeing him make all these plays.”
Judge saw it coming: ‘He’s built for New York’
No endorsement carries more weight than the one from the Yankees captain. Aaron Judge watched Lombard in his first big league spring training in 2025 and came away convinced the young infielder could handle the specific pressure of playing in New York. He put it plainly to Newsday.
“He’s built for New York,” Judge said.
Judge, a three-time American League MVP, said the hardest part of the job is not the pitching but the expectation. He framed the challenge that sinks so many young players, then said Lombard has the temperament to meet it.
“I think it’s just the expectations. The expectation to win at everything,” Judge said. “Win every pitch, win every play, win every game. There’s some places where you play that I’ve seen. Everybody expects to win and wants to win, but I think it’s more they want to win instead of expecting to win. Here in New York, we expect to win, and that can be a lot of weight on players. He has the right makeup to handle that.”
The captain has watched Lombard refuse to shrink from the moment, even as a rookie facing All-Star arms. He drew a contrast with how hard that is for most young players, himself included.
“Sometimes you see young guys coming up, even for me when I was a young guy coming up, you’re almost trying to act the part, hoping that it seems that you can fit in,” Judge said. “But he’s not only acting the part but he’s playing the part, too. You saw it right away.”
Told of Judge’s praise before Friday’s game, Lombard smiled and pointed back at the man who said it.
“That’s really cool,” Lombard said. “Obviously, cool coming from him, who’s basically the perfect example of that, of handling everything that comes with playing here. He’s someone I learn from every day, someone that I look up to.”
The praise keeps coming as the Yankees push for a sweep
The endorsements have not stopped there. Yankees great Paul O’Neill, watching Lombard’s early work with the Yankees, offered a pointed assessment of the rookie’s defense.
“Defensively, he’s made plays I’ve seen that haven’t been made all year in the Yankees’ infield,” O’Neill said on the YES Network.
Even the little things get noticed. Spencer Jones, another Yankees rookie who has starred alongside Lombard, described sitting in the cafeteria after Saturday’s win and watching his teammate immediately turn his focus to the next day’s opponent.
“He’s super mature for his age. He loves baseball,” Jones said. “We were eating just now and he’s talking about the pitcher for tomorrow. It just kind of shows you where his head is at.”
Lombard, a second-generation big leaguer whose father coached in the majors, credits years of reps for the footwork and a steady mindset for the rest. He talks often about staying humble, a trait teammates and coaches keep echoing.
The results have followed. The Yankees have won the first two games of their series with the Braves, improving to 66-51 and holding the top American League wild-card spot, and they go for a sweep Sunday afternoon behind Cam Schlittler.
For that Yankees who have watched pressure swallow young talent before, the early read on Lombard is the same one Judge offered months ago. He looks like he belongs.
