The New York Yankees have made a pitching change, calling up Cody Poteet from Triple-A to replace Clarke Schmidt in the rotation. Schmidt was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a lat injury, prompting the Yanks to adjust their roster.

To make room for Cody Poteet on the roster, the Yankees optioned reliever Cody Morris back to Triple-A. Morris was called up on Thursday when Schmidt went on the 15-day injured list but did not get into a game during his brief stay with the Yankees. Be that as it may, Cody Poteet, an offseason signee, will step into the starting role despite limited major league experience this season.
Boone expressed optimism about Cody Poteet’s ability to step in and contribute effectively, as he did during a spot start in April against Cleveland.
Cody Poteet made a strong impression earlier this year during a doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians. He pitched six innings, allowing just one run and no walks, leading the Yankees to an 8-2 victory. His performance against the AL Central-leading Guardians, who currently lead the American League in runs scored, showcased his potential.
During that game, Cody Poteet effectively utilized his sinker, especially on the inside corner to left-handers. The only run he conceded came from a home run by Estevan Florial, a former Yankee recently designated for assignment by the Guardians.
“He can pitch,” Boone said. “He has a really good changeup. His outing against Cleveland was strong, and we were excited to get him this winter. Despite missing time with injuries, we believe he can help us. His performance in spring training, even though he didn’t make the team, showed us he has the potential to contribute.”
As the Yankees navigate Clarke Schmidt’s absence, Poteet will have an opportunity to solidify his role in the rotation. The team is also awaiting the return of Gerrit Cole, adding further uncertainty to their pitching staff.
This season, Cody Poteet has posted a 3-0 record with a 4.05 ERA in seven Triple-A starts. After missing most of 2022 and 2023 due to injuries, Poteet signed with the Yankees as a free agent in January on a one-year, $750,000 contract.
