For much of the offseason, the Yankees were reported as favorites to sign Blake Snell. However, the San Francisco Giants secured a two-year, $62 million contract with the left-hander. The deal includes an opt-out clause for Snell after the 2024 season.
This signing significantly bolsters the Giants’ pitching rotation, which already boasts Logan Webb and Robby Ray. The Giants are aiming to improve upon their 2023 record (79-83) and return to the playoffs.
Yankees face troll army
While the New York Yankees were also interested in Snell, negotiations reportedly stalled due to luxury tax concerns. With Snell now off the market, Yankees fans voiced their disappointment on social media, lamenting the missed opportunity to acquire the talented pitcher.
Coming off a strong season with the San Diego Padres (14-9 record, 2.25 ERA), Snell could have formed a dominant pitching duo with Gerrit Cole, the Yankees’ ace and reigning AL Cy Young winner. However, the Giants secured his services, potentially creating a fierce rivalry in the National League West.
