In a thrilling spring training matchup against the Minnesota Twins, Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes faced adversity early on but maintained a positive outlook, contributing to the team’s 9-2 victory.

The game presented a challenging first inning for Nestor Cortes, who navigated a bases-loaded situation that could have been avoided with better defensive plays. Despite right fielder Juan Soto’s misread on a blooper and shortstop Anthony Volpe‘s bobble on a potential double-play grounder, Cortes remained focused and resilient.

Reflecting on the outing, Nestor Cortes acknowledged that a couple of untimely breaks had contributed to the challenges he faced. A chopper to third base took an unfortunate hop off DJ LeMahieu’s glove and face, resulting in an RBI single for the Twins. However, Cortes highlighted that, with better luck, he could have limited the damage further.

Despite a less-than-ideal pitching line, there were several positives from Nestor Cortes’ performance. The left-hander started the game with a dominant first inning, striking out the side and delivering 14 strikes out of 18 pitches. Throughout the outing, Nestor Cortes showcased control by not issuing any walks and striking out four batters, highlighting his command on the mound.

One of the encouraging signs was Nestor Cortes extending his pitch count to 48, demonstrating progress in building endurance after his 2023 season concluded prematurely due to a rotator cuff strain. Cortes expressed satisfaction with his overall condition, emphasizing the positive strides made in his recovery. Despite experiencing some offseason achiness in the rotator cuff area, diligent work and an early arrival at spring training have alleviated those concerns.

Nestor Cortes stated, “Everything’s positive. My pitches were really crisp. I threw the pitches I wanted to throw. And most importantly, I got out of there healthy.”

The Yankees later secured the win with fifth-inning runs, breaking a 2-2 tie. Notable contributions came from catcher Ben Rortvedt, scoring on a double by Jace Avino, and second base prospect Jorvit Vivas, who added a three-run homer – his second of the spring.

Giancarlo Stanton made a return to the lineup, going 0-for-3 but showcasing power with a couple of deep fly balls. DJ LeMahieu also made his spring debut, going 1-for-2 with a single, dispelling any concerns about the deflection off his face during the game.

Despite the early challenges, Nestor Cortes and the Yankees found reasons to be optimistic as they continue their preparations for the upcoming season.

As long as Cortes and Rondon sat healthy, and each can start 29 games each, the Yankees will be fine.
