As the 2025 campaign approaches, trade speculation has intensified around the Yankees, with particular attention focused on a potential cross-borough transaction. Market whispers suggest a possible deal that would bring Mets veteran outfielder Starling Marte to the Bronx in exchange for promising prospects Allan Fundo and Raphael Flores. While the proposed trade presents an intriguing possibility for addressing immediate needs, careful examination reveals significant complexities regarding both short-term impact and long-term implications for the Yankees’ roster construction.

Examining proposed trade components

The proposed transaction would see Marte, a decorated two-time All-Star outfielder, donning pinstripes. In exchange, the Yankees would surrender two emerging talents:

  • Allan Fundo – The 22-year-old southpaw demonstrated considerable promise in Single-A last season, compiling an impressive 2.40 ERA across 30 innings while recording 38 strikeouts against 14 walks.
  • Raphael Flores is a 24-year-old backstop who showcased significant offensive potential between High-A and Double-A in 2024. Flores produced a robust slash line of .279/.349/.504, complemented by 21 home runs and 68 RBIs for a .875 OPS. His versatility extends to first base experience, potentially enhancing his value to the Mets.

Though the framework appears balanced at first glance, deeper analysis raises questions about the trade’s strategic wisdom for the Yankees’ organization.

Evaluating Marte’s current value

Marte’s recent trajectory presents cause for careful consideration. The 36-year-old veteran’s 2024 campaign was limited to 94 appearances due to various injuries, resulting in modest production: a .269 average, 7 home runs, 40 RBIs, and a .715 OPS. While these numbers suggest continued competitive ability, they hardly justify the surrender of two promising prospects, particularly given Flores’s offensive ceiling.

Further complicating matters is Marte’s substantial financial commitment. His 2025 salary of $19.5 million, representing the final year of a four-year agreement, poses significant questions about resource allocation. Acquiring an aging player with recent durability concerns on a premium contract seems at odds with the Yankees’ efforts to maintain roster flexibility while addressing systemic needs.

Assessing internal solutions

The Yankees’ outfield situation, while uncertain, features several potential internal solutions to address depth concerns. Despite Trent Grisham‘s hamstring issues and Stanton’s questionable status, the organization possesses promising alternatives in Everson Pereira and Oswald Peraza.

Pereira, previously ranked among baseball’s top prospects, has demonstrated intriguing potential when healthy. Should the Yankees seek external reinforcement, pursuing younger, more reliable talent might prove more beneficial than investing in Marte’s twilight years?

Alternative trade structures

If the Yankees maintain interest in Marte, restructuring the deal could provide a more palatable solution that preserves prospect capital. One potential framework centers on a salary-oriented exchange involving Marcus Stroman:

Alternative Proposal:

  • Yankees acquire: Starling Marte
  • Mets acquire: Marcus Stroman (with potential financial adjustments)

This arrangement would address both teams’ objectives without depleting the Yankees’ prospect pool. Stroman, who excelled during his previous Mets tenure in 2021, carries an $18.5 million salary for 2025, presenting comparable financial implications. Should the Mets hesitate to assume Stroman’s full salary, additional negotiation parameters could be explored.

Exploring other market options

Should the Yankees consider moving a prospect of Flores’s caliber, targeting players with extended team control would better serve their long-term interests. Brendan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals represents an intriguing alternative, offering defensive versatility and contact-oriented offense, though acquiring him would likely require a more substantial package.

For outfield reinforcement specifically, the Yankees should prioritize targets with multiple years of team control rather than committing resources to a one-year rental like Marte.

Strategic recommendation: Decline current proposal

While Marte’s addition might appear to offer immediate outfield depth, multiple factors suggest the Yankees should exercise restraint. His age, injury history, declining production, and significant salary make the current trade proposal strategically unsound.

The organization should instead pursue alternative solutions, whether through internal development, a restructured Stroman-for-Marte framework, or the acquisition of a younger, more durable outfielder. Barring significant salary retention by the Mets or acceptance of comparable financial obligations, the Yankees would be better served exploring different opportunities to strengthen their roster.

As the 2025 season approaches, the Yankees must maintain strategic discipline in their roster decisions. While outfield depth remains a legitimate concern, pursuing the right solution—rather than the most readily available one—will prove crucial to their championship aspirations. The proposed Marte trade, in its current form, falls short of meeting this standard.
