NY POST

Derek Jeter, the New York Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop and current FOX MLB studio analyst, was discussing Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Paul Skenes with Cowherd when an inaccurate statement prompted a swift response.

“The Paul Skenes Pirates, dominant guy, overpowering,” Cowherd began on The Herd. “You faced, obviously, in you were in the Nolan Ryan era. Um …”

“No, no, no, no, no, no, no,” Jeter quickly interjected. “Slow down. Slow down. No, I was way after Nolan.”

“Way after Nolan,” Cowherd acknowledged. “OK, OK.”

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan concluded his 27-year career with the Texas Rangers in 1993. Derek Jeter’s major league debut came on May 29, 1995, with the Yankees, clearly placing his career start well after Ryan’s retirement.

Cowherd’s misstep highlights the necessity of accuracy when discussing historical sports figures. A more suitable comparison for Jeter’s era would include pitchers like Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, Kerry Wood, or Roger Clemens.

Derek Jeter’s career, beginning in the mid-1990s, was marked by encounters with numerous pitching legends, but Nolan Ryan was not among them. Cowherd’s error serves as a reminder of the importance of fact-checking in sports commentary.
