NEW YORK — The New York Yankees sent Jasson Domínguez to Triple-A this month with a clear opportunity in front of him. They needed the 23-year-old to play every day, rebuild momentum, and make a case that his place in the organization had not slipped away.
Three-plus weeks later, that assignment has become more complicated.
The Yankees optioned Domínguez to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 4 after acquiring Heliot Ramos and reshaping a crowded outfield. Domínguez had hit .230 with a .270 on-base percentage and .380 slugging percentage in 53 major league games. He produced six home runs, 14 RBIs, and seven stolen bases, but his 81 wRC+ and uneven defense did not force the Yankees to keep him in the lineup.
Triple-A was supposed to give Domínguez something the Yankees could no longer guarantee in the Bronx: regular at-bats. Instead, his first stretch back exposed another problem. Through his first 12 August games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he went 7-for-48, a .146 average, with one home run. Earlier in the stint, he went 0-for-6 with four strikeouts in an extra-inning loss.
That matters because the Yankees’ outfield hierarchy has kept moving without him. Cody Bellinger is back from the injured list. Ramos is getting major league opportunities. Trent Grisham remains in center field, and rookie Spencer Jones is part of the Yankees’ late-season mix. MLB’s standings entering Monday had New York at 78-59, 4.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East and holding the American League’s top wild-card position.
Domínguez remains only 23 and is still on the Yankees’ 40-man roster. September expansion creates two additional active spots beginning Tuesday. The assignment was not a dead end, but it was supposed to provide a direct path back. Now a promotion is no longer automatic, and the next roster decision carries more meaning than it did when he was optioned.
A strange ninth inning adds another jolt
The latest episode arrived Saturday at Polar Park in Worcester, where Scranton/Wilkes-Barre beat the Worcester Red Sox 9-1.
Dominguez had already produced two hits and two RBIs. Then Worcester used Nathan Hickey, primarily a catcher and first baseman, to pitch the ninth inning. Hickey was making his 13th pitching appearance of the season.
Domínguez struck out against him.
The moment was unusual rather than season-defining. Hickey has logged enough mound work that this was not his first such assignment. Still, the strikeout came after weeks in which Domínguez’s Triple-A production had already become part of the Yankees’ evaluation.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s official recap showed Domínguez drove in runs in the fifth and seventh innings before the late strikeout.
Trade-value concern changes the stakes
The larger issue is no longer only whether Domínguez can hit his way back to Yankee Stadium. It is what the Yankees can reasonably do with him if their outfield remains crowded beyond this season.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported this month that rival clubs no longer view Domínguez as the premium trade asset he once appeared to be. That affects the Yankees because keeping him in Triple-A without a clear role does not solve the roster question, while trading him after a poor year could mean selling at his lowest value.
Nightengale described the concern in blunt terms.
“It’s time for the Yankees to trade former prized prospect Jasson Dominguez, but rival clubs insist that his trade value has plummeted,” Nightengale reported.
The Yankees once had two obvious ways for Domínguez to create value. He could become an everyday outfielder in New York, or remain valuable enough to headline a major trade. Neither route looks as clean entering September.
From 2024 through 2026, Domínguez has totaled 18 home runs, 65 RBIs, and a .690 OPS across 194 major league games. His explosive 2023 debut now sits farther away.
A weekend rebound complicates picture
The strikeout against Hickey should not be separated from what Domínguez did around it.
The final two official weekend box scores shows Domínguez went 5-for-10 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs against Worcester. He followed Saturday’s two-hit game by going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs Sunday in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s 13-10 loss.
That is the strongest counterpoint to treating one strange at-bat as proof of collapse. Official MiLB statistics through Sunday list Domínguez at .269 with seven home runs, 29 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and a .767 OPS across all of his 2026 minor league work.
The problem is that the Yankees are evaluating what he has done since the Aug. 4 demotion. The poor opening stretch still counts, and the major league roster has become more competitive while he has been away.
September becomes the next Yankees test
MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 players on Sept. 1. Domínguez is eligible to return because he has spent well beyond the minimum 10 days in the minors following his option.
That makes the Yankees’ next move revealing.
A recall would show the organization still sees a late-season role for Dominguez. Leaving him at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while another position player gets the extra September spot would be another indication that his standing has slipped.
The Yankees do not need to make a long-term decision this week. Domínguez remains under club control, and his age leaves room for development. But the combination of major league regression, a rough start after the demotion, shrinking trade value, and a crowded outfield has changed the equation.
The position-player strikeout was only one out in a 9-1 win. The Yankees’ decision on what comes next will say much more about where Domínguez actually stands.
