NEW YORK — The New York Yankees added Heliot Ramos, a right-handed bat built to punish left-handed pitching, from the San Francisco Giants minutes before Monday’s 6 p.m. Eastern trade deadline.
Ramos is the profile the Yankees had chased for weeks. He is a former All-Star who mashes left-handed pitching, the exact skill a lineup gone cold and heavily left-handed needed most. New York is sending a prospect package headlined by LHP Henry Lalane and INF Kaeden Kent to San Francisco in return.
The 26-year-old fills a specific hole. Against left-handers this season, Ramos is slashing .302 with a .353 on-base percentage and a .508 slugging mark. Over his career, he owns an .851 OPS versus southpaws. That is the number that pushed the Yankees to move for him.
He also fills a physical one. With Aaron Judge sidelined by a rib fracture and Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton weeks from returning, the Yankees have been thin in the outfield and starved for offense, averaging a league-worst 3.30 runs per game since June 18. Ramos gives them a fresh bat and a right-handed one.
From Puerto Rico first-rounder to a big-league bat
Ramos is 26 and turns 27 in September. He was born in Puerto Rico and grew up as one of the island’s more promising young hitters. The Giants made him a first-round pick, No. 19 overall, in the 2017 draft, and he spent years as a top-100 prospect climbing their system.
He reached the majors for good in 2022, debuting on April 10 of that year. The breakthrough came in 2024, when Ramos hit .269 with a .322 on-base percentage, a .469 slugging mark and 22 home runs over a full season. That performance earned him a spot on the National League All-Star team.
He followed it with another 20-homer year in 2025, launching 21 long balls across a career-high 157 games. This season has been steadier than spectacular. Ramos is slashing .264/.304/.424 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 74 games, his line dragged down in part by a quad injury that cost him time.
Why the Yankees zeroed in on this bat
The Yankees had a clear reason to prioritize that left-on-left production. Their lineup had grown heavily left-handed, especially after they added first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. a day earlier. Ramos gives manager Aaron Boone a hitter built to start against the exact arms that had been shutting New York down.
The timing sharpened the need. Earlier Monday, the Baltimore Orioles traded outfielder Taylor Ward to Seattle, thinning an already shallow supply of right-handed outfield bats. Ramos stood out as one of the few impact options left on the board, and the Yankees moved before he slipped away.
How he fits a banged-up outfield
Ramos steps into an outfield stretched thin by injuries. With Judge and Bellinger down, the Yankees had leaned on Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones and Trent Grisham to cover the grass. Ramos is an upgrade on that group, and for this version of the roster he could play close to every day rather than settle into a strict platoon.
His value is in the bat, not the glove. Ramos has graded as a below-average defender in left field, which puts added pressure on his hitting to justify the lineup spot. For a team desperate for runs, the tradeoff is one the Yankees were willing to make.
The cost reflected his control. Ramos is not a rental. He is under team control through 2029, heading into his arbitration years, which is why the Giants were able to command real prospect value.
Where his Yankees story begins
Ramos joins a lineup already in motion. Luis Garcia Jr., acquired from Washington a day earlier, was hitting third for the Yankees on Monday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. Ramos gives the club a second fresh bat in as many days, and a right-handed one to balance the mix.
The Yankees returned home for a nine-game homestand still chasing the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, sitting three games back in the loss column while holding a wild-card spot. They have won 13 of their last 20 despite the offensive drought, kept afloat by pitching and now hoping two new hitters can finally lift the bats.
The questions will travel with him. Can Ramos hit right-handers well enough to stay in the lineup every day? What happens to his role once Judge and Bellinger return? For now, the Yankees have their lefty killer, a former All-Star with power and something to prove, and his time in the Bronx is about to begin.
