NEW YORK — The New York Yankees appear have backed away from the Kyle Tucker chase even though the team needs outfield help. A well-known baseball insider dismissed any real link between the Yankees and the four-time All-Star, signaling that the Bronx club is not preparing to enter the sweepstakes.
The Yankees face major roster choices this winter after their ALDS loss to the Blue Jays. Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham entered free agency, which opened possible holes across the outfield. Tucker looked like a strong match to cover that gap and keep the Yankees in the championship mix.
Insider analysis now points to the Yankees taking a different path instead of joining a competition that could push past three hundred fifty million dollars. Tucker played the 2025 season with the Chicago Cubs after his December move from Houston. He batted .266 with 22 home runs, 73 RBIs and 25 steals in 136 games.
Insider rules out both New York teams from Tucker chase
Jon Heyman of the New York Post shared his view during a Nov. 14 MLB Network appearance. His remarks caught the attention of Yankees fans who hoped Tucker could replace some of the offense lost when Juan Soto left for the Mets.
“You hear speculation about the New York teams, but I don’t see that,” Heyman said. “The New York teams have pretty good right fielders, right? They have Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. So I’m not seeing that. I don’t know, maybe somebody knows something I don’t know, but not for me.”
Tucker earned his fifth All-Star nod in 2025 and added another Silver Slugger Award. Even with injuries in the second half, he kept himself among the best outfielders in the league. He finished the year with an .841 OPS and continued to show strong defensive work in right field.
Contract value could reach 400 million
The 28 year old is the top free agent on the market and is expected to attract huge offers. League projections estimate his next deal will fall between three hundred million and four hundred million dollars across ten seasons. Some executives who spoke with ESPN predicted a figure near three hundred ninety one point five million dollars.
The Yankees are facing increasing pressure from owners to cut down the payroll. Adding Tucker would require another major financial step. The New York front office seems unwilling to place another massive deal on a roster that already carries some of the sport’s highest salaries.
Heyman pointed to the Toronto Blue Jays as one of the main clubs in the mix. Toronto made the 2025 World Series and finished one win shy of the title. That run pushed the front office to explore high-level additions for another push.

Blue Jays emerge as frontrunners
“I do think the Blue Jays are a definite bidder in this,” Heyman said. “Toronto does aim high, they’ve always aimed high. This is a team that does go for it.”
Toronto outfielder Myles Straw already attempted to recruit Tucker. Straw commented on Tucker’s Instagram post announcing his wife’s pregnancy. He joked about Tucker joining the Blue Jays and even offered babysitting help. The two were teammates in Houston and have stayed close.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com said he heard the Blue Jays mentioned more often than any other club during the GM meetings in Las Vegas. The steady talk around Toronto has shifted much of the Tucker conversation in the league.
Other contenders enter the picture
Several other clubs remain in play. The Dodgers, Phillies and Giants are expected to monitor Tucker’s market. Los Angeles could place Tucker in right field while moving pieces around after Michael Conforto’s struggles in left. Philadelphia could need a replacement if Kyle Schwarber leaves. San Francisco ranked 17th in runs scored and needs more power to stay competitive.
The Cubs want to keep Tucker but have never given a contract larger than one hundred eighty four million dollars. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer met with Tucker’s agent Casey Close at the GM meetings. Many in the league still believe Chicago will not go far enough once the bidding intensifies.
Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reported that the Cubs seem prepared to move forward without Tucker. The organization has long avoided major free agent contracts and often prefers developing its own players.
Yankees shift focus to other priorities
The Yankees plan to put their money into other areas after Heyman’s update. The bullpen needs help after postseason problems exposed issues with depth. Starting pitching also remains a priority for the Yankees as they try to build a stronger rotation.
New York may still consider a Bellinger return if his price falls. Grisham offers reliable defense at a smaller cost. Both choices help the Yankees avoid the long commitment that Tucker will command.
The Yankees went all in on Juan Soto last offseason and watched him leave after one year. That experience could shape their thinking now. Signing an outfielder in his late twenties to a deal that may reach four hundred million dollars carries long term risk that the Yankees do not appear ready to take.
Division rival could land the slugger
Tucker will sign with a club willing to offer a record deal. The Yankees do not plan to be that club. Heyman’s comments show that the Yankees are stepping away from the chase before it even takes shape. The franchise once known for its unmatched spending is choosing a more cautious approach.
The Blue Jays see an opening and may try to take advantage. Their World Series appearance helped them earn respect from top free agents. Tucker could become the centerpiece of their lineup as they build around Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The Yankees are set to watch from a distance as Tucker signs with another team. That choice may bring second thoughts if he produces MVP level seasons for a rival in the American League East.
