NEW YORK — The final swing of the Yankees’ season left a familiar scene at Yankee Stadium: another visiting club celebrating while New York faced questions about how a contender had fallen short again.
Tampa Bay completed its American League Division Series sweep with a 4-3 victory Oct. 7. The loss followed a 93-win regular season and a wild-card sweep of Boston. It also stretched the franchise’s championship drought to 17 seasons, even as another expensive roster reached October with high expectations.
The more difficult question now reaches above the dugout. Manager Aaron Boone remains under contract through 2027, but the executive responsible for assembling his players is approaching an important contractual crossroads. Whether the Yankees treat this offseason as a routine reset or a deeper evaluation could shape their next attempt.
Cashman’s winning record meets different postseason standard
That executive is Brian Cashman, the Yankees’ longtime general manager whose contract runs through the end of 2026. Reporting before the postseason indicated the club expected him back, but no new agreement had been announced as of Oct. 18.
Cashman’s achievements are substantial. Since taking over in 1998, his teams have never posted a losing season. The Yankees won four World Series titles during his tenure, captured seven American League pennants and consistently remained in contention.
Yet those first four championships all came by 2009. Since then, the Yankees have reached the World Series only once, losing to the Dodgers in 2024. Their other October exits include five AL Championship Series defeats, five ALDS defeats and two wild-card eliminations, based on the 2010-26 postseason ledger.
Across 17 seasons after the last championship, the Yankees missed October four times and were eliminated in the Division Series or earlier in seven of the other 13. Reaching October remains easier than winning there.
An expensive roster still left identifiable holes
Cashman’s 2026 moves were not uniformly unsuccessful. Ryan Weathers posted a 3.60 ERA over 137 1/3 innings, while Luis García Jr. supplied an infield offensive upgrade. Paul Blackburn became a productive bullpen piece, and Cam Schlittler emerged as a front-line starter from the farm system.
New York’s offense finished with a 101 weighted runs created plus, 14th in MLB, despite a payroll built to support championship ambitions. Injuries played a major part: Aaron Judge appeared in only 66 regular-season games and missed the Division Series.
Ryan McMahon produced a 78 wRC+ over 124 games, and the Yankees entered the year without reliable alternatives at several positions. At the deadline, they did not add a catcher despite concerns over Austin Wells. Acquired outfielder Heliot Ramos struggled overall, although he hit left-handed pitching well during his Yankees stint.
The bullpen offered a counterargument to blanket criticism. New York’s relief corps finished with the second-best ERA in the majors, helped by reclamation successes and the addition of David Bednar. Cashman also held onto most of the organization’s most valued prospects, including George Lombard Jr., Carlos Lagrange and Elmer Rodríguez.
Cashman acknowledged that the next contract is not automatic
In an MLB.com interview published before the 2026 season, Cashman described his future as dependent on both his own interest and the organization’s judgment. The contract expires this year.
“I enjoy what I do,” Cashman said. “I like competing. I like being a part of a group of people that are fighting for something, so that hasn’t changed in any way, shape or form.”
He also made clear that he could not assume another contract would follow automatically.
“You have to have somebody wanting you to do it, and you have to be contributing,” Cashman said. “If I’m contributing and somebody wants me to continue to do it, then at least in the present, it’s all good. But I can’t predict the future.”
That leaves owner Hal Steinbrenner with two defensible positions. Cashman’s supporters point to nearly three decades without a losing season, a productive pitching pipeline and an ability to rebuild contenders without a prolonged teardown. Critics point to major acquisitions that failed to meet expectations and a club that rarely converts regular-season strength into October advancement.
Why continuity alone cannot answer the question
The larger issue is the direction of baseball operations, not whether every trade can be labeled a success or failure. Cashman has overseen high-profile misses involving Sonny Gray, Joey Gallo, Josh Donaldson and Frankie Montas, but he has also developed and acquired players who kept New York competitive. Both records belong to the same executive.
The 2026 ALDS highlighted how much the Yankees depend on Judge and how thin the offense can become when he is unavailable. It tests years of decisions across scouting, development, trades and free agency.
The distinction matters as the Yankees assess Boone’s role. The manager controls the lineup and clubhouse, but Cashman chooses the roster and senior baseball-operations personnel. Changing one without evaluating the other would leave the central accountability question unanswered.
As of Oct. 18, Cashman remains the Yankees’ general manager, and reports have indicated ownership expects him to return. His next contract, however, has not been publicly announced. After another Division Series exit, the argument over his tenure is no longer about whether he was once great. It is about whether the Yankees believe his current approach can deliver a championship again.
