Yankees’ trade 16 days after deadline exposes little-known MLB loophole

The New York Yankees added ex-Rays catcher Christian Bethancourt on July 28, 2026.

NEW YORK — The Yankees made their loudest moves before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, when the rules and the clock were obvious. More than two weeks later, a much smaller transaction created a different kind of question.

Christian Bethancourt never reached the Bronx after signing a minor league contract on July 28. He spent his brief Yankees tenure at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where his bat heated up enough to make him useful depth at a position the organization had spent weeks trying to stabilize.

The 34-year-old catcher hit .333 with a .407 on-base percentage and .708 slugging percentage in eight games for the RailRiders. He hit three home runs, drove in seven and produced a 1.116 OPS. Those numbers came while Austin Wells and Ali Sánchez remained the Yankees’ major league catching tandem and while veteran Mitch Garver began working his way into the Triple-A picture.

Then, on Wednesday, the Yankees sent Bethancourt to Pittsburgh for cash considerations. The Pirates assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis, with veteran depth suddenly more important because Endy Rodríguez is dealing with left hip inflammation.

For New York, the move also helped unclog a crowded catching depth chart. Garver signed a minor league deal on Aug. 7 after the Yankees failed to land a catcher before the deadline, giving the organization another veteran it wants to evaluate quickly. Bethancourt’s strong eight-game cameo made him useful insurance, but it also meant another experienced catcher competing for the same Triple-A reps.

The transaction itself was modest. The timing was not. The Yankees made it 16 days after MLB’s 2026 trade deadline had passed at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 3, even though that deadline is generally treated as the point when the season’s trading window closes.

That apparent contradiction is where Bethancourt’s deal becomes more interesting than the cash return.

The Pirates also had an immediate need. Rodríguez went on the injured list with left hip inflammation, and Bethancourt gives Pittsburgh experienced insurance behind the plate.

The trade clears Yankees catcher traffic at Triple-A

Garver signed with New York after the Mariners released him, and the Yankees sent him to Triple-A to see whether the 35-year-old can recover enough offense to become a late-season option. He also has a prior relationship with Yankees catching coordinator Tanner Swanson from their time in Minnesota.

Moving Bethancourt removes one veteran from the same depth chart and creates more room for Garver’s evaluation. It does not guarantee Garver will replace Sánchez or reach the major league roster, but it gives the Yankees a cleaner runway to find out.

Bethancourt, meanwhile, gets a clearer opportunity in Pittsburgh. He has 427 games of major league experience and can give the Pirates a ready option if Rodríguez’s hip keeps him sidelined.

The Yankees used a narrow exception inside the deadline rules

The Yankees announced the transaction in a brief statement.

“The New York Yankees today announced that they have traded C Christian Bethancourt to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash considerations.”

MLB’s deadline applies to players on 40-man rosters and Major League contracts. It does not completely shut down trades involving eligible minor leaguers.

Bethancourt qualified because the Yankees had him on a minor league contract and never selected him to their 40-man roster. He also had not been placed on a Major League injured list. Under the post-deadline rules governing minor league players, that kept him eligible to be moved.

The Yankees were not reopening the trade market that closed Aug. 3. They were using a narrow roster-status exception that remains available after the deadline.

MLB eliminated the old August waiver-trade system before the 2019 season. Major league players can no longer be dealt that way after the deadline, but eligible minor leaguers can still change organizations.

Bethancourt’s roster status placed him outside the group covered by the Aug. 3 prohibition.

Yankees have used this route before

Bethancourt’s trade is unusual enough to create confusion, but it is not unprecedented for the Yankees.

New York made a similar post-deadline move in 2024 when it acquired outfielder Cam Eden from Toronto for cash considerations. Eden had previously appeared in the majors, but he was not on Toronto’s 40-man roster when that transaction was completed.

The important point is roster status, not name recognition or previous major league experience.

That is why Bethancourt could move 16 days after a deadline that still prevents the Yankees from trading players on their 40-man roster. What looks like a loophole is better understood as a narrow exception written into MLB’s transaction structure.

For New York, it turned a 22-day depth signing into cash and opened Triple-A catching time. For Pittsburgh, it delivered an experienced catcher at a moment of need. Bethancourt’s move also offered a reminder that MLB’s deadline closes most of the trade market, but not every corner of it.
