New York Yankees 7-1 Cincinnati Reds
CINCINNATI — Max Fried achieved Major League Baseball’s initial 10-victory milestone of the 2025 campaign, Jasson Domínguez collected a personal-best four hits, and the New York Yankees prevented a sweep with a commanding 7-1 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday evening at Great American Ball Park.
Following consecutive late-inning defeats that threatened to disrupt their AL East momentum, the Yankees (46-34) rebounded behind their staff ace and two explosive offensive displays from the top of their order. Fried, now 10-2, crafted a masterful seven-inning performance, yielding just four hits and one unearned run while fanning seven batters. The seasoned southpaw continued his excellence in bounce-back appearances — he now possesses an 8-1 record with a minuscule 0.93 ERA across 10 starts following Yankees defeats.
Yankees Finally Convert With RISP
The Yankees had struggled to 1-for-21 with runners in scoring position during the series’ first two contests and managed just 1-for-8 before the second inning Wednesday. That drought ended when Trent Grisham delivered an RBI single into right field with the bases loaded, snapping a scoreless deadlock and unleashing a long-awaited offensive explosion.
New York concluded 4-for-22 with RISP during the contest — hardly perfect, but sufficient to halt a two-game skid and preserve a one-game advantage over the surging Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
Domínguez, Grisham Spark Yankees Attack
Jasson Domínguez, occupying the leadoff spot for his second straight night, displayed the talent that has consistently driven his elite prospect status. The 21-year-old switch-hitter finished 4-for-5 with two doubles — establishing a new career high — while crossing the plate twice. Grisham, meanwhile, contributed four hits of his own, including two doubles, representing only the third four-hit performance of his seven-year career.
Jazz Chisholm Jr., who received an ejection during Tuesday’s extra-inning defeat after disputing a called third strike, produced the evening’s most emphatic moment. His two-run blast in the third inning — a towering 433-foot drive to right-center — provided the Yankees a 3-0 cushion and demonstrated the power that had been absent from his swing while recovering from a right oblique injury. Chisholm now owns 17 homers this season, including four since returning to the lineup on June 3.
Fried Enters Yankees History
With his 10th victory, Fried became only the third Yankees hurler since 1962 to lead the majors in reaching double-digit wins during a season. He joins CC Sabathia (2011) and Tommy John (1979) on that exclusive roster. Fried’s reliability has anchored New York’s rotation, particularly given ongoing injury concerns affecting Luis Gil and Marcus Stroman.
Reds Silenced Despite De La Cruz Effort
Elly De La Cruz managed two hits and exhibited glimpses of his dynamic potential, but the Reds (40-40) failed to sustain offensive pressure against Fried or the Yankees‘ relief corps. Brady Singer (7-6) absorbed the defeat, permitting five runs across five innings, including Chisholm’s two-run homer.
The Yankees now improve to 11-5 this season when rebounding from two-game losing streaks.
Key Moment and Stat
Grisham’s RBI single in the second inning broke the Yankees’ struggles with runners in scoring position and established the foundation for the remainder of the evening.
Fried has completed at least six innings in every post-defeat start this season and has prevented earned runs in six of those 10 appearances.
