Oswaldo Cabrera justifies hitting experiment after its timing raises eyebrows

In a critical moment during a tied game, Oswaldo Cabrera made an unconventional decision by choosing to bat from the left side against a left-handed pitcher, something he had never done before in his professional career.

The Yankees utility player defended his new hitting experiment after there were concerns expressed over the timing Oswaldo Cabrera chose to do it at PNC Park.

Oswaldo Cabrera’s justification of hitting experiment

Oswaldo Cabrera, a switch-hitter, had been contemplating the idea of hitting left-handed lately as he felt more confident from that side during his efforts to regain his form, albeit with only cage practice to test it out.

However, when the Pirates summoned left-handed reliever Ryan Borucki with one out and a runner on first during a tied game on Sunday, Oswaldo Cabrera decided to put his theory into action.

The outcome? A strikeout that contributed to the Yankees’ 3-2 loss.

Oswaldo Cabrera reflected on a specific at-bat and mentioned that, although it resulted in a strikeout, he felt confident about his abilities in that situation. Despite the game being tied, Oswaldo Cabrera had a positive outlook and decided to take a chance. He referred to his willingness to try new positions, such as first base and center field, even though he had never played them before, as an example of his adventurous approach to the game.

Oswaldo Cabrera had considered hitting left-handed against Pirates lefty reliever Jose Hernandez during Saturday night’s game, but the inning concluded before he had the opportunity to do so.

Manager Aaron Boone noted that in the presence of Borucki, he might have preferred the matchup to remain on the right side. However, he acknowledged that it was a strategy they had been considering in specific matchups.

Oswaldo Cabrera, primarily a right-handed hitter, has maintained nearly identical performance statistics this season from both sides of the plate, although he has exhibited slightly more power as a right-handed batter. He emphasized that he has been feeling more at ease hitting from the left side recently.

Oswaldo Cabrera mentioned that he wasn’t currently thinking about it but emphasized that he was putting in a lot of effort to improve his left-handed swing and make it more to his liking.

Boone stated that there were no plans for it at the moment, but he also mentioned that you never know what might happen in the future.

Yankees pin hope on young guns

Over the recent weeks, the New York Yankees have been delving into their pool of prospects, aiming to identify potential contributors to a future World Series-winning team. During this period, standout performances have emerged from the likes of Jasson Dominguez, Austin Wells, Oswald Peraza, Everson Pereira, and Estevan Florial.

Jasson Dominguez, in particular, showcased immense potential, making a significant impact during this late-season stretch. In just 31 at-bats, the 20-year-old center fielder belted four home runs, driving in seven runs and playing a key role in the Yankees‘ longest winning streak of the season (five games). While Dominguez’s season ended prematurely due to a torn UCL in his right elbow, his performances left a lasting impression, hinting at a promising future alongside Aaron Judge in the outfield.

Catcher Austin Wells, who was called up alongside Dominguez, had a mixed start to his MLB career. Despite struggling at the plate with a .103 batting average, zero home runs, and three RBI in 29 at-bats, Wells displayed adaptability behind the plate, earning praise from manager Aaron Boone. This versatility makes Wells a valuable addition to the Major League roster, where he can share catching duties with Jose Trevino.

Infielder Oswald Peraza and outfielder Everson Pereira also promoted at the same time, have faced challenges in their MLB transition. While Peraza had previously demonstrated his capabilities with a .306 batting average in 2022 and impactful playoff performances, his numbers have declined this season, currently batting .208 with one home run and 12 RBI in 130 at-bats. Despite this, his impressive six doubles and defensive skills make him a potential asset for the infield, alongside Anthony Volpe and Gleyber Torres.

Pereira, known for his contact hitting in the minors, has encountered struggles since his call-up, batting .143 with no home runs and seven RBI in 70 at-bats. Although he has shown flashes of promise, his performance suggests the need for further development in the minors before becoming a consistent contributor in the majors.

Estevan Florial, another outfielder evaluated during the late-season stretch, has also faced significant challenges, posting a .167 batting average with no home runs and two RBI. While his potential remains high, exploring a trade involving Florial to acquire a veteran contributor may be a consideration.

Overall, these young Yankees have injected renewed hope into the organization and its fan base, despite a challenging season. Looking ahead, it is likely that Dominguez, Wells, Peraza, Pereira, and Florial will play roles in the team’s future, with some contributing more regularly than others. General Manager Brian Cashman will assess how best to utilize these talents to expedite the Yankees’ return to World Series contention.
