Marly Rivera, a prominent MLB reporter, has been terminated by ESPN due to her use of offensive language directed toward a fellow reporter. The incident involved her referring to the individual as a derogatory term, specifically ‘f–king c–t’.
ESPN took swift action in response to this behavior and made the decision to sever ties with Marly Rivera. Such conduct goes against the professional standards and expectations set by the network, resulting in the unfortunate end of her tenure with ESPN.
The incident that angered ESPN
It happened at Yankee Stadium during the Yankees-Angels game on April 18. Marly Rivera has been dismissed following an incident in which she yelled “f-king c-t” at another female reporter. The ugly exchange with another reporter erupted after Rivera accused her of attempting to steal time set aside last week to interview Yankees star Aaron Judge.
Marly Rivera has worked as a dugout reporter for the Home Run Derby as well as on “Sunday Night Baseball” and as an ESPN Radio MLB postseason game analyst. She gave a unique viewpoint to the telecasts due to her bilingualism, particularly when conversing with Latin players. She also contributed to ESPN’s digital platforms.
Who was the victim?
Fellow reporter Ivon Gaete was the victim of Marly Rivera’s offensive language. They clashed before the Yankees-Angels game when Gaete arrived to interview Judge as well.
Marly Rivera claimed she scheduled a meeting with the Yankee captain and that when she tried to notify Gaete of the meeting, Gaete disregarded her.
During the heated debate, Marly Rivera used the words “f-king c-t,” which were captured on tape.
Marly Rivera attempted to apologize after the incident was recorded, but Gaete refused.
“I fully accept responsibility for what I said, which I should not have,” Rivera told The New York Post.
“There were extenuating circumstances but that in no way is an excuse for my actions. I am a professional with a sterling reputation across baseball and I do believe that I am being singled out by a group of individuals with whom I have a long history of professional disagreements.”
Who is Ivon Gaete?
Gaete is the wife of John Blundell, MLB’s Vice President of Communications. A freelance reporter, she was in town for a Tokyo Broadcasting assignment with Shohei Ohtani.
Marly Rivera stated that she and Blundell had issues over the years, which she believes is why this event erupted and led to her dismissal.
Blundell did not respond while Gaete could not be reached right away.
Marly Rivera had been with ESPN for 13 years, covering MLB — with a focus on the Yankees — and working as a writer and on-air personality for both the English language platforms and ESPN Deportes.
When contacted about Marly Rivera, ESPN told the Post that he “no longer works here.”
