According to SNY, the Yankees have checked in on Pete Alonso. If Juan Soto doesn’t re-sign with the Yankees — and even if he does — Alonso is an intriguing option for New York, especially given their need at first base after declining Anthony Rizzo’s option for 2025.

Cashman’s key offseason targets: Soto and Alonso

Yankees GM Brian Cashman is entering a crucial offseason with both Soto and Alonso as potential targets. While bringing Juan Soto back remains a primary focus, Cashman has also been in discussions with Scott Boras, the agent representing both players, regarding Alonso.

When asked if Alonso’s name came up during recent talks, Cashman confirmed it. “Yeah, sure he did,” Cashman told SNY. “There are a lot of high-quality players in this marketplace, and certainly Pete did an amazing job with the Mets. I had a brief conversation with Scott about a lot of his—he has a lot of free agents, which is normal, and Pete’s one of them, so yes.”

Pete Alonso: A power bat for the Yankees’ 2025 roster

Known for his impressive power and consistent performance with the Mets, Alonso could bring both strength and durability to the Yankees’ lineup. Cashman’s recognition of Alonso’s talent signals the Yankees’ openness to exploring various impactful players in this free-agent market. Alonso, with his power-hitting prowess, would be a solid addition to the Yankees’ 2025 roster, regardless of Soto’s decision.

While Soto’s potentially record-breaking contract demands loom large over the Yankees’ free-agency strategy, Alonso presents a compelling alternative or complement. Cashman’s acknowledgment of the “high-quality players” available this offseason emphasizes the Yankees’ flexibility. If Soto decides to sign elsewhere, Alonso would serve as a reliable offensive asset to reinforce New York’s lineup.

Cashman is fully aware of the competition in this year’s free-agent market. With big-market teams like the Dodgers and Mets vying for top talent, the Yankees are likely to face stiff competition for both Soto and Alonso. Cashman, however, emphasized that the Yankees are prepared to compete and are focused on building the best possible team. “We’re ready to do whatever,” Cashman noted, highlighting the appeal of the Yankees’ storied franchise.

Although Soto’s future with the team remains uncertain, Cashman’s recent talks with Boras show the Yankees’ commitment to pursuing multiple options. Alonso’s offensive skills could make him a strong candidate for a major role in New York, offering the Yankees a solid path forward if Soto moves on.

Ultimately, Cashman’s discussions with Boras reveal an offseason strategy aimed at enhancing the Yankees’ roster, with both Soto and Alonso as potential cornerstones. The upcoming weeks will determine if Cashman’s pursuit of one or both of these players will come to fruition, potentially setting up a dynamic Yankees lineup for 2025.
