During a recent episode of The Michael Kay Show, the host dismissed rumors of any off-the-record relationship with Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman. Some Yankees fans have accused Kay of aligning his opinions with the Yankees’ front office. In response, Kay made a bold offer: $10,000 in cash to anyone who can prove that he has had any communication with Cashman over the past two months, whether by text, email, or any other means.
“I’m gonna make an offer that I’ve never made before,” Kay said. “To those fans saying I got my marching orders from Cashman: I give you a standing offer of $10,000, cash, if you can prove that over the last two months, I’ve had any interaction with Brian Cashman.”
Domínguez vs. Verdugo debate
Michael Kay also addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez and his role in the team’s lineup. Domínguez, though promising at the plate, has received criticism for his defensive capabilities, particularly in left field.
“Yankee fans proved last night that a lot of them are pretty damaged, too,” Kay said. “At one point during the game, I said it’s gonna be interesting what they do with left field because Domínguez had a rough road trip. But clown heads, mouth breathers jumped on me: ‘He had two home runs, a 900 OPS!’ That’s not what I said. I didn’t mention offense. It was about his defense. In the postseason, you’re gonna want to get every single out of the 27. Right now, he’s not a good defensive outfielder, especially in left field.”
The Yankees’ decision to continue starting Alex Verdugo in left field has also sparked controversy. Verdugo has been underperforming offensively for much of the season, posting a .233/.292/.353 slash line with an 83 wRC+. His struggles have been ongoing since June, as he has hit just .219/.276/.309 during that period. His frequent groundouts to the right side have become so common that he has set a Statcast-era record with 115 groundouts in that direction.
Despite these issues, Verdugo remains a regular starter in the Yankees’ lineup, leaving fans and analysts puzzled by the team’s decision to stick with him.
In contrast, Jasson Domínguez, one of the Yankees’ top prospects, has shown significant promise since his call-up. After returning from a midseason oblique injury, Dominguez delivered strong performances in Triple-A and carried that momentum into the Yankees’ West Coast trip, where he posted a .945 OPS. Domínguez has hit as many home runs during that trip as Verdugo has managed in the entire second half of the season.
Despite his success, Dominguez has found himself out of the starting lineup in four of the 14 games since his promotion, which has frustrated fans who believe he has far more potential than Verdugo.
The Yankees’ decision on who starts in left field could have a significant impact on their postseason hopes. Manager Aaron Boone has stated that he will find playing time for both Verdugo and Dominguez, but as the team pushes toward securing a playoff spot, making the right call is essential. Fans and analysts are increasingly vocal about the need to prioritize Domínguez’s potential upside over Verdugo’s continued struggles.
As the Yankees enter a crucial stretch of the season, including a matchup against the Baltimore Orioles this Wednesday, decisions on who will play in left field are becoming more critical. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. EST, and both Verdugo and Domínguez will be competing for a spot in the starting lineup.
