In a major trade, the New York Yankees haveofficially acquired All-Star outfielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres, asconfirmed by Joel Sherman late Wednesday night. The trade involves outfielder Trent Grisham, who is heading to the Padres in exchange for a group of players: RHP Michael King, RHP Drew Thorpe, RHP Jhony Brito, RHP Randy Vásquez, and catcher Kyle Higashioka.
Juan Soto’s Victory

At 25 years old, Juan Soto—entering his walk-off year in 2024—has established himself as one of the top hitters in the game. Last season with the Padres, he posted an impressive batting line of .275/.410/.519, with 35 home runs and leading the MLB with 132 walks. Juan Soto’s career includes a remarkable OPS+ of 157 over six MLB seasons, earning him three All-Star selections, four Silver Slugger Awards, and four top-10 finishes in the National League MVP voting.
It’s worth noting Juan Soto’s durability, as he has averaged 154 games played per season since 2019 (excluding the shortened 2020 season). Although his long-term role is projected to be as a designated hitter, given Giancarlo Stanton’s leading role with the Yankees, Soto’s offensive prowess easily outweighs any defensive concerns. With a career WAR of 28.6 through his 24-year-old season, Juan Soto is on track for a potential Hall of Fame career.
The Padres chose to part ways with Juan Soto due to their commitment to reducing their payroll following a disappointing 2023 season, during which they had one of the highest payrolls in MLB. As he heads into his final arbitration hearing, his 2024 salary is expected to exceed $30 million, setting the stage for his impending free agency next winter.
For the Yankees, the acquisition of Juan Soto comes on the heels of the deal for Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo. This development presents a challenge in center field, forcing the Yankees to either position Verdugo in center or move franchise slugger Aaron Judge back to the challenging center-field position.
While concerns about Judge’s ability to stay healthy may arise with a move back to center field, it’s worth noting that he excelled in that role in 2022, setting the AL single-season home run record and winning the MVP award. Verdugo, on the other hand, has limited experience in center field dating back to 2021 and primarily played the position only once in 2019 with the Dodgers. Despite potential defensive adjustments, the Yankees are willing to overcome these challenges to integrate Juan Soto’s exceptional hitting skills into their lineup.
